Sharks & Rays
Sharks and Rays research and protection
Paul G Allen Family Foundation
USA
Founded by philanthropists Jody Allen and the late Paul G. Allen of Microsoft, the PGA foundation supports conservation efforts to 'preserve ocean health, protect wildlife, combat climate change, and strengthen communities'. This includes 'improving understanding of sharks, rays, and coral reefs through academic research and applying that knowledge toward conservation efforts.' This is achieved by granting funding to conservation organizations.
Pelagic Shark Research Foundation
USA
The mission of PSRF is to develop and assist projects that contribute to a better understanding of elasmobranchs (sharks and rays), with an emphasis on those which contribute to their conservation and management. This includes research conducted by PSRF, research projects sponsored or assisted by PSRF, and an educational outreach program. The term ‘Pelagic’ is used by scientists to describe the open ocean, high seas, offshore environment and the creatures in those regions, including the sharks.
Pretoma
Costa Rica
Costa Rica-based Pretoma is a marine preservation group which speaks out against the country's role in the international shark fin trade. The International Shark Foundation has listed over two hundred shark species as endangered and Costa Rica has become a focal point for this cruel trade. The organisation also carries out research to help protect ocean resources and to encourage sustainable fisheries policies in the country and Central America. As part of their efforts, Pretoma organises year-round public awareness marine conservation campaigns as well as education programs in educational institutions in the country. Sea Turtle Restoration Project (STRP) is part of their programme.
Pro Natura Peninsula de Yucatan
Mexico
Pronatura is a Mexican non-profit civil organization which works on environmental issues through regional offices, including the one in the Yucatan Peninsula (PPY). PPY works on various forms of conservation and sustainable use of natural resources in priority areas of the Yucatan Peninsula, including marine projects focusing on the protection of whale sharks and turtles,
Projeto TAMAR
Brazil
TAMAR Project (an abbreviation of Tartarugas Marinhas, the Sea Turtles) is a Brazilian non-profit organization owned by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation. The main objective of the project is to protect sea turtles from extinction in the Brazilian coastline. The project has since expanded to include protection of sharks and all the sea wildlife that are part of the environment in which the sea turtles live.
Reguar
Guadeloupe
Reguar, coordinated by Kap Natirel, works to study and protect sharks and rays throughout the French Antilles (Guadeloupe, Martinique, St Martin and St Barthelemy). The Network, also known as the French Antilles Sharks Network, involves many associations, stakeholders in the sea, volunteers, scientists, managers of natural areas and State bodies. Their aim is 'to preserve and conserve the elasmobranch [sharks and rays] populations' of the area and their habitats, and to inform and educate the public about these marine creatures.
Roatan Marine Park
Honduras
RMP was started by a group of concerned divers and conservationists to protect Roatan’s reefs and ecosystems. They are 'dedicated to the conservation of Roatan’s protected marine and coastal area including all of its flora, fauna, physical and biological characteristics and phenomena, and historical and cultural resources'. They achieve this by a number of practical initiatives, including conducting research into marine species such as sharks, turtles and corals while involving the public in citizen science projects, by creating marine infrastructures so as to minimize damage to reefs such as moorings management, by educating via outreach programmes to local communities and divers, amongst others. In addition, they have a lionfish eradication programme.
Save Our Seas Foundation
Switzerland
The Save Our Seas Foundation supports marine projects in the areas of Conservation, Awareness, Research and Education. Since 2003, the Foundation has been dedicated to protecting life in our oceans, especially sharks and rays. It supports researchers, conservationists and educators around the globe by funding their projects and helping them to tell important scientific and environmental stories. Centres in South Africa (Cape Town), Seychelles and the USA (Miami, Florida) are dedicated to learning about sharks and rays and sharing that knowledge.
Save Our Sharks SOS
Web based, UK
Save Our Sharks is a project initiated by Sarah Geron, with the intention of raising awareness about the threats faced by sharks today all over the world, eg. finning. Save Philippine Seas
Philippines
SPS began as an online platform in May 2011 as a response to a large-scale illegal wildlife trade case dubbed in the media as the “rape of the Philippine Seas.” That initial social media campaign of online advocacy grew into an independent non-profit organization which campaigns to protect the marine resources of Philippines. It is essentially a movement which informs, educates and engages in community-based projects, as they say ‘seatizen-led initiatives that are empowering Filipinos towards collective action and behaviour change’. Its legal name is Philippine Seatizens, Inc. Amongst their projects are Shark Shelter Project, Save Sharks Network Philippines and Waste Watchers Philippines.
Save Sharks Network Philippines
Philippines
Sharks Network Philippines (SSNP) is a coalition of organizations and institutions in the Philippines' scientific, NGO, and tourism communities working on shark and ray research and conservation. It was co-founded in 2014 by SPS, Marine Wildlife Watch of the Philippines, and Greenpeace Philippines. They draw together policymakers, advocates, government officials and shark enthusiasts, eg at their Shark Summits, in order to advocate for the protection of sharks nationally.
