Sharks & Rays
Sharks and Rays research and protection
Marine Megafauna Research Center
Mozambique
Described as the birthplace of MMF which was founded to research, protect and conserve the large population of marine megafauna found along the Mozambican coastline. In recent years, MMF researchers have expanded their efforts worldwide. MMF has been conducting ground-breaking marine research along Mozambique’s southern coastline since 2003, with countless scientific discoveries as a result, and continues with research on threatened marine species, specifically sharks, rays, and sea turtles.
Marine Research Foundation
Malaysia
MRF’s mission is to improve the status of marine ecosystems and key species through research, conservation and education, both locally and regionally. The goal of our projects is the sustainable use of natural resources with a practical approach to conservation, and we provide efficient solutions to concerned stakeholders. For many years their focus has been the conservation of marine turtles and their habitats, running community-based turtle conservation projects, in-water research and tracking studies and aerial survey projects to support conservation efforts. Sharks and Dugongs also come within their sphere of influence.
MedSharks
Italy
MedSharks is a research and conservation association which aims to promote knowledge, awareness and protection of the Mediterranean ecosystem and particularly of Mediterranean sharks. It is also part of the Clean Sea Life, an awareness project on marine litter. Over 15 years MedSharks has carried out several research projects on Mediterranean sharks in cooperation with several international research teams. Many of MedSharks’ studies are citizen-science projects.
Mexican Caribbean Manta Ray Project
Mexico
The Manta Caribbean Project takes a multidisciplinary approach to the conservation of manta and mobulid rays, and their habitat in the Caribbean Sea, through robust science and research, while raising awareness. They are a branch of the UK non-profit, Manta Trust. and providing education to the community and stakeholders. Located in the northern Yucatan Peninsula, the transition zone of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea is thriving with life. The Manta Caribbean Project aims to identify and conduct research on the poorly understood populations of these huge creatures in the Mexican Caribbean.
Micronesian Shark Foundation
Palau
The Micronesian Shark Foundation is a Palauan based non-government organization, established to facilitate the study of sharks both in Palau and throughout Micronesia. Due to the exceptional conservation efforts of Palau, which declared Palau a Shark Sanctuary in 2009, and continuing efforts to protect its islands and waters, the local ocean is rich with fish and healthy corals. This makes it an ideal focus for research and the collection of data, relevant for Palau and Micronesia and more generally for conservation specialists and scientists internationally.
Mision Tiburon Costa Rica
Costa Rica
Mision Tiburon Conservation Association is a Costa Rican non-profit organization, with the goal to promote the research, management and conservation of sharks and marine life in our oceans. Founded in 2009 by marine scientists concerned about the drastic decline of shark populations around the world, the organisation focuses on marine research concerning sharks, sea turtles and rays as well as education programs targeted at local coastal communities. The operations center is in Guanacaste Province, in the North Pacific of Costa Rica, and operates in southern Costa Rica as well. The organisation focuses its efforts on three main areas: marine education, marine research and political and social advocacy
Ocean Frontiers
Cayman Islands
Two time recipient of the Project Aware Environmental Achievement Award, Ocean Frontiers has a history of conservation and environmental projects, including the installation of Grand Cayman's biggest coral nursery where Staghorn and Elkhorn fragments are grown and out-planted to reefs which have coral loss or damage. Other projects include culling the invasive Lionfish, coral bleaching monitoring, coral spawning data collection, shark conservation and tagging, amongst others.
Ocearch
USA
Ocearch is conducting unprecedented research on sharks in order to help scientists collect previously unattainable data in the ocean. They achieve this through research expeditions, education and media. Their research expeditions are conducted aboard the M/V OCEARCH, which serves as an at-sea laboratory. Their OCEARCH GLOBAL SHARK TRACKER demonstrates the results of their tracking research on sharks (and some turtles). They have developed an OCEARCH STEM SKILLS curriculum for students, and use multimedia to inform and educate about shark science, in support of their goal to returning the ocean ‘balance and abundance’.
PADI AWARE Foundation
USA
PADI's foundation has evolved from Project Aware to PADI AWARE Foundation as of April 2021. It was established to help conserve underwater environments through a wide variety of activities including education, advocacy, and action, and covers coral reef restoration, protection of sharks and rays, marine debris, marine protected areas, amongst others.
PADI AWARE Foundation (Aus)
Australia
PADI's foundation has evolved from Project Aware to PADI AWARE Foundation as of April 2021. It was established to help conserve underwater environments through a wide variety of activities including education, advocacy, and action, and covers coral reef restoration, protection of sharks and rays, marine debris, marine protected areas, amongst others. The office in Brookvale in the north of Sydney serves the Asia Pacific area.
PADI AWARE Foundation (UK)
UK
PADI's foundation has evolved from Project Aware to PADI AWARE Foundation as of April 2021. It was established to help conserve underwater environments through a wide variety of activities including education, advocacy, and action, and covers coral reef restoration, protection of sharks and rays, marine debris, marine protected areas, amongst others. The Bristol office is the HQ for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA)
Palau Shark Sanctuary
Palau
In 2009, Palau became the world’s first national shark sanctuary, ending all commercial shark fishing in local waters and giving a sanctuary for sharks to live and reproduce in 629 000 square kms (237,000 square miles) of ocean. Palau forbids all commercial shark fishing within its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) waters. This has since been extended, with a larger area declared a marine sanctuary effective as 2020. This is not without controversy, due to the impact on the local economy.
