Sharks and Rays research and protection

Deutsche Stiftung Meeresschutz

Germany

The German Foundation for Marine Conservation is a group of committed animal welfare and nature conservation advocates, who fight for the protection of threatened marine animals and the preservation of marine habitats. They support and carry out projects, campaigns, and initiatives aimed at conserving marine life. This includes marine & nature conservation; animal welfare; science and research; and development cooperation. Since 2022 they have had a long term eDNA Project on Fiji-Island to identify habitats of guitarfish species and of young bullsharks. They support projects to protect sharks, rays, sea turtles and marine mammals, restoration of coral reefs and seagrass beds, for sustainable fishing and ocean cleanups. Dyer Island Conservation Trust

South Africa

The Dyer Island Conservation Trust works to conserve and research the fragile and critically important marine eco-system at the southern-most tip of Africa. They strive to protect the largest surviving colonies of the endangered African Penguin whose numbers are at an all-time low; the globally important breeding and calving grounds of the Southern Right Whale; and, the world's densest populations of the vulnerable Great White Shark.

East Africa Whale Shark Trust

Kenya

The East African Whale Shark Trust is a grass roots project dedicated to marine conservation in general and whale shark conservation in particular. Based on Diani beach the EAWST was founded in response to the increase in the whale shark population along the Kenyan coast as well as increased interest from the tourist sector. The increase in the number of whale sharks along the Kenyan coast has meant they have become a target. All that is required by international law is that whale shark trade be monitored. The EAWST provides a research centre for collecting and analysing data on the local whale shark population, its habits and movements. The Trust works with other regional organisations, the long term goal being to increase protection and promote the conservation of the biggest fish in the ocean.

En Busca del Pez Sierra Costa Rica

Costa Rica

In Search of Sierra Fish – Costa Rica, or Searching for the Sawfish - is a project of the University of Costa Rica that was born in 2015, and is currently part of the Costa Rica Wildlife Foundation's marine conservation program, aimed at generating essential information for the effective protection of these species and the areas they inhabit. The project involves an interdisciplinary team that seeks, through research, environmental education and outreach, to promote the protection and conservation of sawfish, their habitats and coexistence with the communities they interact with in Costa Rica, and beyond.

European Elasmobranch Association

The European Elasmobranch Association (EEA) is a non-profit umbrella organisation of European organisations dedicated to the study, management and conservation of sharks, skates, rays and chimaeras (cartilaginous fishes or chondrichthyans). The objectives of the EEA are to coordinate the regional and international activities of its member organisations to advance research, sustainable management, conservation and education on cartilaginous fishes throughout Europe.

Fondazione Cetacea

Italy

The Cetacea Foundation is committed to protect the marine ecosystem, especially the Adriatic sea, through activities of education and conservation. It uses the valuable contribution of biologists, veterinarians, scientists and volunteers. It is active in the rescue of animals in need, especially sea turtles and cetaceans, with an important rescue center for marine turtles in the Adriatic. In addition the foundation works to educate students and collaborates with public institutions and associations in projects regarding education for sustainable living, respect and preservation of the marine environment. The foundation has carried out research mainly on large marine vertebrates (cetaceans, turtles and sharks), in association with research institutes.

Fundacion Megafauna Marina de Ecuador

Ecuador

The overall objective of FMME is to conduct research which can be applied towards the comprehensive management Marine Megafauna populations for the sustainable benefit of local Ecuadorian and Galapagos Islands communities. Their research focuses on Manta Rays and Whale Sharks, collecting data and obtaining unique results of these species which have been used by governmental and non-governmental organizations to make law changing decisions and have contributed to the protection and conservation of these and other Marine Megafauna species and their ecosystems.

GRIS : Gruppo Ricercatori Italiani

Italy

GRIS consists of researchers dedicated to the study of cartilaginous fish (sharks, rays and chimeras) in order to promote research, protection, conservation and management of these vertebrates.

Gili Shark Conservation

Indonesia

The Gili Shark Conservation Project is an award-winning conservation and data collection program, the first of its kind in the Gili Islands in Indonesia. Situated on the beautiful island Gili Air, they work around all of the Gili islands: Gili Air, Gili Meno, and Gili Trawangan. The goal of their shark research project is to raise awareness for shark- and marine conservation but also to assist the local community and helping the Gili's to become plastic-free. They aim to protect and restore the coral reef environment within the Gili Matra Marine Recreational Reserve and to help to create the first recognized shark nursery ground in Indonesia. To achieve this goal they conduct research using multiple research methods including; underwater roving video surveillance, roving survey dives, photographic identification, coral health index surveys, coral restoration, and land & marine based time-lapse projects. Via weekly conservation classes at the local school and a Plastic Free Paradise Campaign, they are educating the local community and visitors of the Gili Islands about the importance of our ocean and what we can do to protect it.
