Institute for Ocean Conservation Science
USA
The Institute for Ocean Conservation Science works to advance ocean conservation through science. They conduct world-class scientific research that increases knowledge about critical threats to oceans and their inhabitants, provides the foundation for smarter ocean policy, and establishes new frameworks for improved ocean conservation. The Institute's research focuses on advancing ecosystem-based fisheries management, a strategy which recognizes that the oceans' problems are interconnected and that species and habitats cannot be successfully managed in isolation; as well as on advancing knowledge about vulnerable and ecologically important marine animals that are understudied. They are dedicated to developing scientific approaches to sustainably manage forage fish, small schooling fish that are food for marine mammals and seabirds but are being depleted from our oceans. They conduct world-class scientific research that increases knowledge about critical threats to oceans and their inhabitants, provides the foundation for smarter ocean policy, and establishes new frameworks for improved ocean conservation. The Institute is part of the Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences
Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture
Greece
The Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture (IMBBC) is one of the three institutes of HCMR. It is based on the premises of HCMR in Crete (Thalassokosmos). The main research activities of IMBBC are: genetics/genomics and biotechnology, aquaculture, marine biodiversity and ecosystem management, bioinformatics and e-Infrastructure, environmental chemistry and bioanalysis.
Institute of Marine Sciences, University of Dar es Salaam
Tanzania
The Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of Dar es Salaam was established in 1978 with the mandate to conduct research and offer postgraduate and undergraduate training and consultancy services in all aspects of marine sciences. Their vision is to become a centre of excellence in the advancement of knowledge in marine science. The Institute is located in Zanzibar with sub campuses at Mizingani Street and Buyu. In addition, IMS has a mariculture centre located in Pangani, Tanga. The Institute comprises three academic sections namely: Marine and Coastal Resources Management (MCRM), Marine Technology and Innovation (MTI) and Geosciences, Oceanography and Informatics (GOI). Based in Buby, Zanzibar
Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO
France
The purpose of the Intergovernmental Oceanic Commission is to promote international cooperation and to coordinate programmes in research, services and capacity-building, in order to learn more about the nature and resources of the ocean and coastal areas and to apply that knowledge for the improvement of management, sustainable development, the protection of the marine environment, and the decision-making processes of its Member States. In addition, IOC is recognized through the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as the competent international organization in the fields of Marine Scientific Research (Part XIII) and Transfer of Marine Technology (Part XIV).
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
Switzerland
The IPCC has been established by World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to assess scientific, technical and socio-economic information relevant for the understanding of climate change, its potential impacts and options for adaptation and mitigation. Ocean acidification is one of many concerns within their focus.
Ionian Dolphin Project
Greece
Since 1991, the Ionian Dolphin Project, a project of the Tethys Research Institute, aims to ensure the long-term viability of marine mammals, dolphins and Mediterranean monk seals, living in coastal waters of the eastern Ionian Sea. Dolphins and Mediterranean monk seals inhabiting the coastal waters of Greece are facing significant threats. Some of them must deal with increasing human encroachment, while others have disappeared altogether from portions of their former range. The research is concentrated primarily in these three Natura 2000 areas: the Inner Ionian Sea Archipelago (common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins and Mediterranean monk seals), the Gulf of Ambracia (bottlenose dolphins), the waters surrounding the islands of Paxoi and Antipaxoi (bottlenose, common and striped dolphins). Their work includes: continued monitoring of marine mammals through field research methods; monitoring threats to local marine ecosystems (pollution and overfishing); public awareness, education and capacity building initiatives; establishing synergies with stakeholders aimed to raise awareness on the need of developing measures to protect marine mammals and implement existing regulations; dissemination of information in the scientific literature and delivery of management proposals to international agreements and bodies concerned with the protection of marine biodiversity.
