HEPCA Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association

Egypt

HEPCA is a NGO specializing in the field of marine and land conservation in the Egyptian Red Sea. What began with a dozen of concerned individuals grew through the years to become a large network of scientists, professional divers, industry experts, and community members who are pro-active in protecting and preserving the natural resources of the Red Sea, as well as promoting conservation and sustainable tourism practices.

Hawaii Wildlife Fund

Hawaii

HWF is a dedicated to the conservation of Hawaii's native wildlife through research, education and advocacy. The HWF Team is made up of educators, conservationists, researchers, naturalists, communities, volunteers and donors devoted to the protection of Hawaii's fragile marine ecosystem and inhabitants.

Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust

UK

The Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust works directly with local communities to ensure whales, dolphins and porpoises are protected and valued throughout Scotland’s west coast. Their programme of community based research and education encourages strong local stewardship and supports meaningful change for the conservation of Hebridean cetaceans and marine life.

Hellenic Centre for Marine Research

Greece

The Hellenic Centre for Marine Research is a governmental research organisation operating under the supervision of the General Secretariat for Research and Innovation (GSRI). It comprises three institutes: the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture (IMBBC), the Institute of Marine Biological Resources and Inland Waters (IMBRIW) and the Institute of Oceanography (IO). Its main areas of research include physical oceanography, marine geology, marine biology, fisheries, aquaculture, marine genetics, and inland waters. It also provides consulting services, offers educational programs and courses, and participates in international research projects. The two international standard aquaria and Hydrobiological Station of Rhodes, operating under the HCMR umbrella, aim to stimulate interest in, to develop and to spread knowledge about the marine environment mainly focusing in the Eastern Mediterranean area

Hong Kong Dolphin Conservation Society

Hong Kong

HKDCS is the only conservation society dedicated to whales, dolphins and porpoises (cetaceans) of Hong Kong. Their work focuses around the Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin (known as Chinese white dolphin and pink dolphin) and Indo-Pacific finless porpoise. The numbers of these species are dropping rapidly, especially the humpback dolphins, from 250 in the 1990's, to 100 in 2009 to 32 in 2018. HKDCS promotes public awareness, preservation of habitats, raising standards of Hong Kong's whale watching activities and conducts research. They are involved in opposing reclamation projects such as for the airport third runway, bridges and large-scale artificial islands which destroy the habitat of dolphins and porpoises.

IODE International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange

Belgium

The programme "International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange" (IODE) of the "Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission" (IOC) of UNESCO was established in 1961. Its purpose is to enhance marine research, exploitation and development, by facilitating the exchange of oceanographic data and information between participating Member States, and by meeting the needs of users for data and information products. The Ocean Data Portal (ODP) provides a one-stop shop approach to oceanographic data held by the IODE global network of 80 National Oceanographic Data Centres (NODCs), as well as to resources from other participating systems.

Icelandic Orca Project

Iceland

The Icelandic Orcas research project aims to learn more about Icelandic killer whales and their role in the marine ecosystem. This is a long-term dedicated effort to follow killer whales in Icelandic waters and understand more about their behaviour and the threats they may face. 'To achieve this we use a variety of research techniques, such as acoustic recordings, photo-id, tagging with suction-cup tags, biopsy sampling and underwater observations of their interactions with prey.'(from the website)

InPact. Instituto de Pesquisa e Acao

Brazil

InPact was established in 2020 by researchers in the environmental and sustainability areas. They aim to contribute to the conscious use of natural resources, based on research supported by actions aimed at sustainable practices, environmental preservation and conservation, with the engagement of traditional communities and society as a whole. This includes the rescue, rehabilitation and reintroduction to the natural environment of marine and aquatic animals. They also carry out environmental education activities; monitoring of coral reefs; research into sediment analysis through granulometric analysis, organic matter and carbonate contents; identification and monitoring of macrobenthic species and reef fish, and analysis of the physical and chemical parameters of the water.

Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre

Australia

A purpose-built collaborative facility for marine science and ocean engineering research, IOMRC provides innovative and effective solutions to challenges facing the world's oceans. Built for the UWA Oceans Institute, the IOMRC brings together more than 300 marine scientists across disciplines including biodiversity, fishing, tourism, Indigenous engagement, climate change, oceanography and conservation.

Institut Français de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer

France

IFREMER is an oceanographic institution in France, which focuses its research activities in the following areas: Monitoring use and enhancement of coastal seas, Monitoring and optimization of aquaculture production, Fishery resources, Exploration and exploitation of the oceans and their biodiversity, amongst others.

Institut de Ciències del Mar

Spain

The ICM is a scientific research institute focusing on 'ocean and climate interactions, conservation and sustainable use of marine life and ecosystems, and impact mitigation of natural and anthropogenic hazards'. The Institute’s team of nearly 300 specialists in different fields of oceanographic research (physics, chemistry, geology and biology) 'give the ICM a broad vision of the marine ecosystem, and the ability to assess changes and human impacts on the environment and seek appropriate solutions.' Amongst their many initiatives is a strong imperative for dissemination, communication and education, for which ICMDivulga is the platform.

Institute for Marine Research (Philippines)

Philippines

The Institute for Marine Research is a newly established grassroots non-profit organization that aims ‘to conduct long-term and fine-scale research on coastal marine ecosystems, using this scientific evidence to educate, transform and encourage locally led marine conservation strategies within the Philippines’. Their focus region is Apo Island & Dauin Municipality, Negros Oriental, the Philippines.
