Ciimar

Portugal

CIIMAR hosts 10 research groups, organized in 3 research lines, with a scientific staff of more than 400 researchers with diverse backgrounds. Through the integration of different disciplines, the centre aims to contribute to the understanding of the processes which occur in the ocean and the coastal zones, for the sustainable use of aquatic resources and the evaluation of the impact of human activities on ecosystems. Their NetTag project aims to reduce and prevent marine litter derived from fisheries, bringing together scientists, engineers and the fisheries industry. The NetTag team has designed and produced a new technological device, currently under testing phase, for the location and recovery of fishing gear under water.

Coastal Education and Research Foundation

USA

CERF is a publisher with the stated goal is 'to help translate and interpret coastal issues for the public and to assist in the development of professional coastal research programs'. CERF-JCR disseminates the latest research information to professors, specialists, researchers, and the general public in an effort to maintain or improve the quality of our planet's coastal resources, via scientific papers, book and encyclopedia series, their monthly society newsletter (Just CERFing), and the internet.

Coastal Marine Research Station (ECIM)

Chile

ECIM is the marine research and teaching laboratory of the Pontificia Catholic University of Chile (PUC). It has an associated marine protected area. From their website: 'While coastal marine ecology, sustainable management and conservation are still the core research fields at the lab, there is now active inter-disciplinary research in microbiology, population genetics, biological and physical oceanography, coastal engineering, marine renewable energies and other fields of marine sciences.'

Coastwatch Europe

Ireland

Coastwatch Europe (CWE) protects wetlands by raising public awareness of their value, and demonstrating practical ways to save them. CWE is an international network of environmental groups, universities and other educational institutions, who in turn work with local groups and individuals around the coast of Europe. Coastwatch Europe has participated at hundreds of events since the 1980’s, facilitates surveys of the coast, litter, seaweed, and advocates for Marine Protected Areas, amongst other actions.

Conservacion ConCiencia

Puerto Rico

Conservación ConCiencia is a non-profit organization in Puerto Rico dedicated to environmental research and conservation that aims to promote sustainable development by working collaboratively with communities, governments, academia and the private sector. Their mission is to implement effective, science based conservation actions that move our societies towards sustainability. Conservación ConCiencia focuses on projects in Puerto Rico and Cuba, including the following: Puerto Rico’s first shark research and conservation program in collaboration with the seafood industry; analyzing parrotfish supply chain and its market in Puerto Rico; promoting commercial fisheries exchange between Puerto Rico and Cuba with lessons learned from successful fisheries management and promoting Cuban fishers access to local markets for entrepreneurial opportunities. Another example of their work is a large scale restoration of mangroves and seagrass project, in collaboration with The Ocean Foundation.

Cook Islands Whale Research

Cook Islands

One of the leading cetacean research organizations in the world, CIWR and its associate CCRC study and distribute information on the populations of cetaceans and other marine mammals in the Cook Islands, South Pacific. CIWR documents population abundance of humpback whales, beaked whales, sperm whales, dolphins, other cetaceans, marine mammals, turtles and sharks through opportunistic and systematic surveys.

Coral Reef Research Foundation

Palau

The Coral Reef Research Foundation (CRRF) is a non-profit organization incorporated in the State of California and the Republic of Palau. Their purpose is to increase knowledge of coral reefs and other tropical marine environments, to contribute to the efforts worldwide to conserve coral reefs and their environments. In addition, their applied marine research takes in oceanography, monitoring climate change in the area, fisheries on the islands, and dugongs

Costa Rica Wildlife Foundation

Costa Rica

CRWF works to ensure the prevalence of wildlife and its habitat through interdisciplinary and community-based stable conservation initiatives. This includes research, education, communication, and marketing, all aimed to produce conservation action to reduce the threats that wildlife is facing. In addition to the many terrestrial based projects, their marine projects include SEACOW which is directed towards the West Indian manatee in the Costa Rican Caribbean and PEZ SIERRA which focuses on the critically endangered sawfish found in the region.

DEEPWAVE e.V

Germany

DEEPWAVE e.V. was founded in 2003 by the marine biologist and deep sea researcher Onno Groß and a small group of ocean enthusiasts in Hamburg. Since then, it has successfully campaigned regionally and internationally for the protection of the oceans and their inhabitants. DEEPWAVE's goal is to contribute to the development of environmentally friendly structures for the marine ecosystem, as well as to inspire individuals to conserve the oceans. They do this by raising awareness of the threats to the oceans, spreading scientific knowledge, contributing to improve marine policies, and providing a forum for networking.

Delfin de Ponente

Italy

The Delfini del Ponente APS is a young association of scientists and professionals with a focus on protection of the sea and its creatures, all with an interest in conserving the biodiversity of Western Liguria in Italy. Monitoring cetaceans and other marine wildlife including seabirds in the Western Ligurian Sea is their main activity, largely focused on the bottlenose dolphin, a species that lives in coastal shallow waters. In addition, they present educational activities to cultivate an environmental culture, including internships. They are based in the city of Imperia, positioned in a central area of the “Pelagos Sanctuary”.

Deutsche Stiftung Meeresschutz

Germany

They support and carry out projects, campaigns, and initiatives aimed at conserving marine life. This includes marine & nature conservation; animal welfare; science and research; and development cooperation. Since 2022 they have had a long term eDNA Project on Fiji-Island to identify habitats of guitarfish species and of young bullsharks. They support projects to protect sharks, rays, sea turtles and marine mammals, restoration of coral reefs and seagrass beds, for sustainable fishing and ocean cleanups. Their educational and awareness-raising work aims at anchoring the importance of marine conservation in people's minds and actions.
