Tropical Marine Research for Conservation
Philippines
‘Founded in 2005, TMRC is a small research and conservation outfit conceived to help promote research and conservation of marine mammals and their habitats in Southeast Asia, particularly in the Philippines. It specializes in abundance surveys (using DISTANCE-based line transects and photo-ID), monitoring marine mammal by-catch, studying marine trophic ecology and grass-root level conservation education. It also has expertise in fish biology and fishery-related problems, plankton studies and rapid resource assessments.’ (Need to confirm whether still in operation)
Tropical Reef and Conservation Centre
Sabah, Borneo, Indonesia, Malaysia
TRACC (Tropical Research And Conservation Centre) is a marine conservation organization based in the Celebes Sea dedicated to protecting sea turtles and restoring coral reefs destroyed by the local fish bombing practices of Malaysia. Based on Pom Pom Island in Sabah, Borneo, TRACC is working to restore local reefs that have been damaged by bomb fishing. They focus on coral reef restoration, turtles and sharks, as well as running projects that involve growing coral, rebuilding reefs and measuring biodiversity. They train divers who have the opportunity to become engaged in the conservation projects as do snorkelers. There is also an opportunity to take an A level in Marine Science.
Turkish Marine Research Foundation
Turkey
TUDAV conducts marine research, and works to protect marine life, educate the public on the marine environment and raise awareness on its importance in our life. They coordinate educational projects on the protection of the sea, including summer schools and seminars, and organize workshops on current problems like pollution, marine biodiversity, sustainable fisheries, marine protected areas and alien species. TUDAV advocates for marine protected areas, is engaged in the fight against IUU fishing and the protection the marine environment from various pollution sources. They have played a leading role in the establishment of various marine protected areas in Turkey.
Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation
South Africa
The Two Ocean Aquarium is involved in marine research, marine conservation, ocean advocacy, and most recently, in 2018, founded of the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation to educate about healthy and abundant oceans for life. The Education Foundation is able to reach and have an impact on people, communities and habitats with their environmental education, conservation and marine science research programmes.
University of the South Pacific. Institute of Marine Resources
Fiji
Focused on the sustainable management and development of the marine and coastal resources of the Pacific, IMR delivers research and consultancy studies, technical analysis, development work, professional training and education in the marine and coastal sector.
Vikela.earth
South Africa
The stated mission of vikela.earth is to protect the planet via facilitating environmental conservation research and the development of sustainable solutions through collaboration with people and organisations. Their work focuses on: Fundraising for projects, assisting in research including marine research, creating documentaries, and protecting animal areas. Amongst their many environmental projects, the marine component will include a research project into the migration patterns of sharks and the impact of these on marine ecosystems. They also plan on creating coral nurseries on the east coast of Africa, and to spread awareness about the important of healthy reefs and creating sustainable income sources for local communities.
WCS Tanzania
Tanzania
WCS continues to work with the Tanzania government, conservation partners and communities to strengthen fisheries management and marine protected areas across mainland and Zanzibari waters. WCS’s Trans-Boundary Conservation Area (TBCA) initiative aims to improve fisheries management and marine conservation at local, national and international levels. Underpinned by decades of WCS coral reef research and monitoring along East Africa’s coast, the project area – which extends from Pangani up to Diani in southern Kenya, was chosen due to its climate resilient reefs, the level of threat to its marine biodiversity and the potential for sustainable fisheries management.
WWF Arctic
Arctic
Since 1992, WWF's Arctic Programme has been working with partners across the Arctic to combat threats to the Arctic and to preserve its rich biodiversity in a sustainable way. There are offices in seven countries: Canada, Greenland (Denmark), Finland, Norway, Sweden, Russia and the United States, where they work with governments, businesses and people with the goals of preserving the Arctic's rich biodiversity, ensuring that the use of renewable natural resources is sustainable, and reducing pollution and wasteful consumption.
WWF Japan
Japan
WWF Japan works on various conservation projects both nationally and internationally that Japan has significant humanity’s impacts on Forests, Marine, Wildlife and climate change. The current marine campaigns include: Conserving the Yellow Sea Ecoregion, surrounded by China and the Korean Peninsula, through conducting scientific biodiversity assessments to identify high conservation value areas and working together with local community groups to achieve sustainable exploitation of marine resources; Restoring Nansei Islands while strengthening local communities’ ability to conserve the natural resources they depend on; and, bringing conservation into fisheries management by improving fisheries practice, recusing the impacts of fishing and promoting the consumption of MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) and ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council) certified sustainable seafood.
Whale Shark and Oceanic Research Center
Honduras
WSORC operates one of the few, year-round whale shark monitoring and research centers in the world. A dedicated team of scientists and volunteers work to maintain and restore the marine environment in Utila, Honduras, via research and education. Research includes whale sharks, as well as lionfish, SCTLD and coral reefs. In addition, WSORC increases the presence and availability of researchers in Honduras to work with whale sharks, and provides a strong platform for aspiring Marine Biologists to learn and help kick-start their careers in Marine Conservation via their internship programme.
Whale Wise
Iceland
Whale Wise studies populations using a variety of methods, in order to gain an in-depth understanding of each system. They currently research the interaction between whales and human activity in Iceland, working towards a sustainable whale-watching industry in Skjálfandi Bay in Iceland. 'We assess the response of blue and humpback whales to whale-watching encounters, with the aim of guiding a suitable conservation plan for both whales and people. Second, through citizen science, we engage with local communities, and fishermen in particular, to understand local whale distribution and the relationship between whales and people in Iceland' .
