Southern Leyte Coral Reef Conservation Project
Philippines
Established by the Coral Cay Foundation and launched in 2002, the Southern Leyte Coral Reef Conservation Project (LRCP), ‘trained teams of volunteers, staff and scholars in coral reef monitoring techniques whilst building capacity and implemented crucial educational programmes. This resulted in the collection of 3, 685 bio-physical samples that presented the condition and health of coral reefs, guided the establishment of Marine Protected Areas and monitored the effectiveness of management areas.’ The project was completed in 2020.
Speseas
Trinidad and Tobago
SpeSeas works to impact on the way the ocean is used and managed in Trinidad and Tobago, the Caribbean and the world. This is achieved via their research on local coastal and marine ecosystems which leads to an understanding of human impacts, via their education programmes, and via their advocacy for management and stewardship of coastal and marine ecosystems and the resources they provide to all sectors of society. Their aim is 'to enhance the integrity and resilience of coastal and marine ecosystems by influencing human behaviour in Trinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean.'
State of the World's Sea Turtles
USA
SWOT is a partnership among Oceanic Society, the IUCN-SSC Marine Turtle Specialist Group, Duke University's OBIS-SEAMAP, and a growing international network of institutions and individuals. This SWOT Team 'works to compile and publish global sea turtle data that support conservation and management efforts at the international, national, and local scales. These data reside within the SWOT database', a remarkable source of information on the biogeography of turtles worldwide which is publicly available (refer to their website).
SubMON
Spain
Submon aims to conserve marine biodiversity and to achieve the sustainable use of the marine environment by promoting a change in the relationship between society and the sea, through on-site actions and using and transmitting knowledge. The organization develops its own projects, mainly directed towards the conservation, the study and awareness of the marine environment, and always with a clear social and sustainable development character. This includes is a strong programme for schools and on ocean literacy. Their many and extensive projects include research and protection of whales, dolphins, sea turtles, molluscs, seagrass meadows, amongst others. An influential body, their expertise is widely sought after internationally.
Sustainable Ocean Alliance
USA
Founded in 2014, Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA) activates young people, develops and implements innovative solutions, and ‘mobilizes an ocean workforce to restore the health of the ocean in our lifetime’. By supporting innovative startups, nonprofits, and grassroots campaigns through publicity, funding and grants, they are actively working on solving the problems faced by the oceans, including via technological and scientific solutions. As of 2021, they had become involved in 222 initiatives all over the world, each dedicated to restoring and sustaining the health of our ocean focusing on the following 5 general categories of solutions: Carbon (CO2) reduction and blue carbon; Pollution reductions and the circular economy; Blue Foods (Sustainable protein, fisheries and aquaculture); Ocean data, literacy and research; and Ecosystem preservation and restoration.
Swiss Cetacean Society
Switzerland
The Swiss Cetacean Society-SCS is a non-profit organisation devoted to the preservation of marine mammals in their natural habitat. Based on the conviction that better scientific knowledge of the animals and their environment is essential to ensure efficient protection measures, SCS organises worldwide campaigns at sea for data collection on cetacean populations. This data is ultimately used in research. At the same time, SCS distributes general information about marine mammals to the Swiss public, encourages access to specialised training and organizes the logistics at sea of scientific and environmental programmes abroad.
Sydney Institute of Marine Science
Australia
The Sydney Institute of Marine Science (SIMS) is a world-leading marine science institute and the principal marine research facility in NSW. It is a partnership between Macquarie University, the University of NSW, the University of Sydney and the University of Technology, Sydney. SIMS is a unique focal point for collaborative marine research and innovation, provision of marine research for policy makers and managers, and research training and teaching in the marine sciences.
Tara Ocean Foundation
France
The Tara Ocean Foundation, the first recognized public interest foundation in France dedicated to the world’s oceans, organizes voyages to study and understand the impact of climate change and the ecological crisis facing the world's oceans. 'We use high-level scientific expertise to raise awareness and educate young people, mobilize policy makers at the highest level, and enable emerging and developing countries to access the latest knowledge about the Ocean. ' In addition, the Tara Ocean Foundation partners with many French and international groups as advocates for policies on climate, biodiversity and plastic pollution. Since 2015, as Special UN Observer, the foundation has been supporting the important decisions to be taken in favour of the ocean in the eyes of leaders and encouraging them to maintain ambitious objectives.
Tethys Research Institute
Italy
Specialised in cetacean research, Tethys has generated one of the largest datasets on Mediterranean cetaceans and over 300 scientific contributions. Tethys aims to protect the Mediterranean biodiversity by promoting the adoption of a precautionary approach for the management of natural resources. Aim is to prevent the decline of marine species and to encourage a sustainable use of the marine environment. Tethys first conceived and proposed the creation of the Pelagos Sanctuary (in 1991) and of the Losinj Dolphin Reserve in Croatia (in 1993). Studies include: cetaceans in the Corso-Ligurian-Provencal basin, in the Adriatic Sea, and in the Ionian Sea, the Messina Strait and in several other Mediterranean and Atlantic areas. Research methods track and record the horizontal movements of whales, population studies, bioaccoustic research, photo-identification and behavioural sampling, remote biopsy sampling for genetic and toxicological analyses, and historical research, resulting in enormous photographic archives of cetacean images, that have resulted in the identification of over 1,500 individuals of eight Mediterranean species.
The Safina Center
USA
Led by ecologist and author Carl Safina, the Safina Center is comprised of staff, fellows and creative affiliates who together create a body of scientific and creative works that advance the conservation of wildlife and the environment. Part of Stony Brook University, it was founded in 2003 as the Blue Ocean Institute and later renamed in honour of the founder, Carl Safina
TriOceans
New Zealand
The Tangaroa Research Institute of Oceanographic Studies (TriOceans) is a marine research institute based on the North Island of New Zealand, describing themselves as ‘a collective of scientists and innovators’. They focus on marine mammal science and engineering, with a view to producing quality research and new technologies, while inspiring conservation through education.
