Oceans Research

South Africa

Oceans Research specialises in investigating the biology and ecology of mega-fauna, including sharks, marine mammals and terrestrial carnivores. They advise governmental and non-governmental bodies on relevant conservation issues.

Oceanscape

USA and France

Extract from website: ‘Oceanscape is an effort of the GEO Blue Planet Initiative to identify the numerous organisations (including projects, programmes, and other structures) working in the “ocean space”, and to clarify the connections between them (as well as identifying opportunities to make connections where none exist). The Partnership for Observation of the Global Ocean (POGO), a founding member of GEO Blue Planet, is leading the development of the Oceanscape portal. This portal, which was launched during Ocean Obs’19 in September 2019, is a community effort that aims to serve a variety of stakeholders: the scientific community, who may not be aware of all the initiatives taking place in the “ocean space”, and who could benefit from identifying synergies, new collaborations and avoiding overlap or duplication; NGOs, as well as the private sector, who may be looking for suitable organisations for collaboration; governments and funding agencies, who may not have a clear picture of the “oceanscape” of organisations, what they are each doing and how they differ from one another.’

Oceanswell

Sri Lanka

Oceanswell is Sri Lanka's first marine conservation research and education organization, and is focused on educating and equipping students to conduct marine conservation research. They run field courses for students, as well as conducting research in the local environment, including the Sri Lankan Blue Whale project.

Oceanus

Italy

Oceanus is a non-profit organization focuses on promoting and developing research projects aiming at the preservation of aquatic ecosystems and environments

Ocearch

USA

Ocearch is conducting unprecedented research on sharks in order to help scientists collect previously unattainable data in the ocean. They achieve this through research expeditions, education and media. Their research expeditions are conducted aboard the M/V OCEARCH, which serves as an at-sea laboratory. Their OCEARCH GLOBAL SHARK TRACKER demonstrates the results of their tracking research on sharks (and some turtles). They have developed an OCEARCH STEM SKILLS curriculum for students, and use multimedia to inform and educate about shark science, in support of their goal to returning the ocean ‘balance and abundance’.

Operation Wallacea

UK

Operation Wallacea is a biodiversity and climate research organisation. For 25 years it has run biodiversity field expeditions to support the research of hundreds of academics and funded from tuition fees paid by students that then gain experience of working with publishing scientists. Opwall is at centre of a small network of organisations. The conservation projects are often run through the Wallacea Trust), whilst Wildlife Experience tours at the Opwall research sites and outside the main Opwall research season are run by a sister organisation – Friends of Wallacea . Expeditions in the marine field include projects such as a coral reef conservation in Madagascar, and coral reef and turtle conservation in Mexico.

Paul Ricard Oceanographic Institute

France

The Paul Ricard Oceanographic Institute is an oceanographic institute situated on the Île des Embiez. The island is in the Var department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in South Western France. The Institute was founded in 1966 in response to one of the first cases of industrial pollution in the Mediterranean, and since then has continued to protect marine life globally, and specifically in the Mediterranean. In the words of Paul Ricard's granddaughter, 'Through its research and public outreach activities, the Institute is addressing today's most pressing challenges: preservation of marine biodiversity, climate change, sustainable exploitation of living resources, and restoring coastal environments. As we race to save the Earth, the Ocean could be our second chance.'

Pelagos Cetacean Research Institute

Greece

The Pelagos Cetacean Research Institute is a scientific non-profit organisation aiming to the study and conservation of cetaceans, including whales, dolphins, porpoises and a few more related species. Using science as a tool, the Institute is constantly expanding the limits of knowledge about cetaceans in the Greek Seas and the Mediterranean This knowledge is then spread to the society and used as a base start for conservation efforts focused on cetacean species populations.

Pelagos Sanctuary

Monaco

Pelagos Sanctuary is a Protected Area for marine mammals between France, Italy and Monaco. The Sanctuary is a marine area of 87,500 sq. km; a rough estimate lists more than 8,500 macroscopic animal species representing between 4 % and 18 % of global marine species, a remarkable biodiversity. The large mammals include cetaceans, specifically whales and dolphins, and seals. Within this area, research is conducted. Their role in educating the public and raising awareness of the conservation issues facing marine life is evident in the website, with information about strandings networks, the threats posed by human activity, amongst others.

Perry Institute for Marine Science

USA

The Perry Institute for Marine Science is a not-for-profit organization committed to protecting the oceans through research that both informs the public and encourages action, ultimately improving understanding and stewardship of the oceans, with a focus on coral reefs, fisheries, mangroves, Marine Protected Areas, coastal ecosystems, and climate change. The Institute has been conducting research in support of ocean conservation and stewardship throughout the Caribbean. Some of the core programs have centered around the effective use of Marine Protected Areas for marine conservation and fisheries management, the health of coral reefs and associated ecosystems, and the management of key Caribbean fishery species like the queen conch, Caribbean spiny lobster, and particularly the Nassau grouper.

Pew Charitable Trusts Ocean Conservation

USA

Pew Charitable Trust’s ocean work includes efforts to create large marine reserves; end illegal fishing; protect key species such as penguins, sharks, tuna and forage fish; and establish policies that protect, maintain, and restore the health of marine ecosystems.

Point Blue Conservation Science: Marine Ecology Division

USA

Point Blue's (formerly PRBO) Oceans Division uses science to guide ocean ecosystem protection, conservation, and management. Their work is focused on both coastal areas and the oceans, including the impact of climate change, sustainable fisheries and improved ocean zoning strategies that protect wildlife and ecosystems by engaging decision makers and the public in support of healthy oceans. Active in California, Farallon Islands and Gulf of Farallones, Antarctica. Point Blue’s (formerly PRBO) 140 scientists work collaboratively to reduce the impacts of climate change, habitat loss and other environmental threats while promoting nature-based, climate-smart solutions for wildlife and people.
