Marine Research Foundation
Malaysia
MRF’s mission is to improve the status of marine ecosystems and key species through research, conservation and education, both locally and regionally. The goal of our projects is the sustainable use of natural resources with a practical approach to conservation, and we provide efficient solutions to concerned stakeholders. For many years their focus has been the conservation of marine turtles and their habitats, running community-based turtle conservation projects, in-water research and tracking studies and aerial survey projects to support conservation efforts. Sharks and Dugongs also come within their sphere of influence.
Marine Science Institute, University of Philippines
Philippines
MSI is involved in research and academic endeavours in marine biology, marine chemistry, physical oceanography, marine geology, and related disciplines such as biotechnology. The institute studies marine ecosystems in its main compound in the National Science Complex and the Bolinao Marine Laboratory in Bolinao, Pangasinan. It also pursues extension work in marine protection and management.
Marine and Freshwater Research Institute, Iceland
Iceland
Marine and Freshwater Research Institute (MFRI) is a government institute, which employs around 190 staff, operates 2 research vessels and 10 branches around the country, including an aquaculture experimental station. MFRI conducts various marine and freshwater research and provides the Ministry with scientific advice based on its research on marine and freshwater resources and the environment. The main research priorities are 'research on marine and freshwater ecosystems, sustainable exploitation of main stocks, ecosystem approach to fisheries management, research on fishing technology and seafloor and habitat mapping'.
Mauritius Oceanography Institute
Mauritius
The mission of the Mauritius Oceanography Institute is to develop and strengthen oceanographic research, using an integrated scientific approach, to enhance understanding of ocean and coastal processes, for rational development of marine resources, within the maritime zone of the Republic of Mauritius.
Mediterranean Science Commission
Monaco
The CIESM promotes international, cross-frontier research in the Mediterranean and adjacent waters (Atlantic, Black Sea, Red Sea). It is an authoritative think tank, with 9600 experts exploring and commenting on emerging issues in all marine disciplines. CIESM supports a network of several thousand marine researchers, applying the latest scientific tools to better understand, monitor and protect a fast-changing, highly impacted Mediterranean Sea. Structured in six committees and various taskforces, CIESM runs expert workshops, collaborative programs and regular congresses, delivering authoritative, independent advice to national and international agencies. Their directory lists Marine Research Institutes around the Mediterranean countries in Europe and North Africa.
Moidjio Centre for Research, Conservation and Development
Comoros
Moidjio is a Comorian research and conservation group which focuses on cetacean and turtle conservation projects, undertaking acoustic, cetacean monitoring and turtle monitoring projects. They also work to stop poaching of sea turtles on the islands and develop a sustainable ethical whale watching industry. They are working on humpback whales, spinner dolphins, green and hawksbill turtles, lemurs, mangroves, seagrass meadows and coral reefs. Their work includes tree planting to protect against erosion, research into mangroves, sea grass and coral reefs. They study sea and terrestrial birds, lemurs and Livingston bats on the islands; plus education programmes in sustainability and English in the local communities.
Mote Marine
USA
Mote Marine Laboratory’s main campus is in Sarasota, Florida, where the Mote Aquarium plays an important role in Mote’s outreach efforts to educate visitors about marine life. This includes by 'presenting exhibits and programs that reflect ongoing research in the laboratory and that stimulate curiosity, discovery, exploration and stewardship of aquatic environments'. The laboratory has numerous marine research programmes, and aims to ' advance marine science and education, supporting conservation and sustainable use of marine resources.'
NAMMCO
Norway
NAMMCO is an international regional body for cooperation on the conservation, management and study of marine mammals in the North Atlantic. The four partners are Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland and Norway. They have the aim of 'sustainable and responsible utilisation of all living marine resources, including marine mammals.' Through their cooperation under the umbrella NAMMCO, they 'aim to strengthen and further develop effective conservation and management measures for marine mammals'.
NETCET
Adriatic Sea
The stated main objective of the NETCET project is 'to develop common strategies for the conservation of cetaceans and sea turtles in the Adriatic through regional cooperation. Due to the migratory nature of these species cross-border collaboration and shared management responsibility between Adriatic states is crucial in order to plan effective long-term conservation strategies.'
Namibian Dolphin Project
Namibia
The Namibian Dolphin Project is a research and conservation organization run by several independent scientists and educators. Their mission is primarily to research Namibia’s cetaceans to generate data on these populations that can be used for their conservation through management. Their focus is on coastal dolphins, as well as humpback whales, right whales and leatherback turtles. Additionally they are work with the community through an outreach programme to increase awareness of the Namibia’s marine life.
National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration
USA
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is an American scientific agency within the United States Department of Commerce that focuses on the conditions of the oceans, major waterways, and the atmosphere. Their Marine Debris Program helps to identify reduce and prevent debris in the marine environment, targeting beachgoers, fishers, boat and marine owners, and students and their educators. Their resources include useful information products. Their ARGO programsupports a global array of almost 4,000 robotic profiling floats that measure the temperature and salinity of the upper 2,000 meters (1.2 miles) of the ocean. This constant monitoring of the temperature, salinity, and currents of the upper ocean is publicly available within hours after collection and used in research across the globe.
