Coral Reefs
Corals and Coral Reef research, monitoring, protection and restoration
Bay Islands Conservation Association
Honduras
BICA was founded to initiate and coordinate efforts for the protection of the fragile natural resources of the islands. To operate the organization has been divided into three chapters strategically located in each of the Islands, Utila, Roatan and Guanaja. The focus of their work is on environmental education, community development, protection and research & monitoring, and works with local authorities on the management of marine and terrestrial protected areas in the Bay Islands of Honduras. Amongst their many activities are included coral restoration, park patrols, marine water quality monitoring, monitoring of reef fish larvae, and protection of mangroves and seagrass.
Big Blue Conservation
Thailand
Big Blue Conservation aims to protect the Koh Tao ecosystem in Thailand, and to inspire and build a global team of conservationists through education. As a marine conservation school, they actively contribute to pioneering marine research, with ongoing field research like diver-related reef damage, the impact of discarded nets on the reefs, and the recovery of corals from mass bleaching events. With a team dedicated to such scientific research, they work at formulating the policies and guidelines required to protect coral reefs for the future.
Biosphere Foundation
USA, Indonesia
Biosphere Foundation's aim is promoting intelligent use of resources, and runs several specific projects related to land, space and sea. They are based in the USA with operations in Indonesia managed by PT Biosphere Stewardship Center and a partnership with Yayasan Biosfir Indonesia to work in Bali Barat National Park. The foundation has a four pronged approach:- Research, Education, Community, and Policy. Amongst their current focus projects is coral restoration.
Blue Corner Marine Research
Bali, Indonesia
Blue Corner Marine Research is a conservation organization specializing in scientific diver training, coral restoration and reef health monitoring. They have established an extensive coral restoration project in the Nusa Pendia Marine Park, where interns and divers can work with the conservation team.
Blue Resources Trust
Sri Lanka
Blue Resources Trust is a marine research and consultancy organisation based in Sri Lanka that aims to promote informed science based decision making to facilitate the sustainable use of marine resources. Their past and current research has focused on coral reefs, fisheries, sustainable livelihoods, marine protected areas, and the development of domestic and international marine policy. They consult in a wide range of marine related fields including field surveys, EIAs, technical advice, and project management. In addition, they facilitate underwater photographers and film crews.
Buccoo Reef Trust
Trinidad and Tobago
The Buccoo Reef Trust (BRT) was specifically created to assist the government and communities in addressing the threats facing Tobago’s marine environment and to explore opportunities for the sustainable development of marine tourism, fishing and aquaculture in the Southern Caribbean region. BRT has successfully implemented education, research and coastal zone management programmes throughout Tobago, supporting its aim of building capacity in marine sciences that will enable governments, resource managers and stakeholder and the general public to make informed decisions on how best to interact with and use the region’s marine resources.
COREsea
Thailand
CORE sea is a research and marine conservation education organization which works to understand and protect the marine biodiversity of South East Asia, by providing a platform for both research and marine education. Researchers and conservationists develop, test and apply best practices to actively help our deteriorating coral reefs, while students and interns participate in marine conservation oriented projects such as maintaining and establish projects like artificial reefs and coral nurseries, remove ghost nets, clean reefs and beaches.
Carmabi Foundation
Curacao
CARMABI was established in 1955 as a marine research institute. Now the organization has 4 pillars on which it works: Marine and Terrestrial Research, Park Management, Nature and Environment Education and Consultancy. The research facilities host different researchers from all over the world to study the island's reefs. Park Management manages several national parks on Curacao: The Christoffel National Park; the largest national park of the island, an important Sea Turtle nesting area: Shete Boka National Park; The Curacao Marine Park, where they protect the reef and conduct scientific marine research, and shortly to be added is The Curacao Rif Mangrove Park.
Central Caribbean Marine Institute
Cayman Islands
CCMI is dedicated to conducting and facilitating research, education, and outreach that will sustain marine diversity for future generations. They maintain a growing marine research and education facility with a resident team of staff based in Little Cayman in the Cayman Islands, focusing on the adaptation and resilience of coral reefs. Their research team conducts state-of-the-art experimental research, as well as 20+ years of monitoring and observational studies, to understand how coral ecosystems respond and evolve in the face of climate change. They develop empirically verified methods to ensure successful, complex restoration can boost wild coral populations and promote biodiversity on coral reef ecosystems, helping to restore populations of threatened coral species across the Cayman Islands. They work at education and outreach initiatives, including for local and international students.
Centro de Estudios Marinos Honduras
Honduras
The Centro de Estudios Marinos (CEM) was established with the aim of developing technical capacities in applied research to support the management of marine biodiversity. Founded in Utila, Islas de la Bahía, as the “Centro de Ecología Marina de Utila”, the Center now works on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of Honduras. A significant aspect of their work involves the local fishing community promoting sustainable fishing, marine protected areas, and restoration projects.
