Big Blue Conservation

Thailand

Big Blue Conservation aims to protect the Koh Tao ecosystem in Thailand, and to inspire and build a global team of conservationists through education. As a marine conservation school, they actively contribute to pioneering marine research, with ongoing field research like diver-related reef damage, the impact of discarded nets on the reefs, and the recovery of corals from mass bleaching events. With a team dedicated to such scientific research, they work at formulating the policies and guidelines required to protect coral reefs for the future.

Big Blue Ocean Cleanup

Canada, Gibraltar, Malaysia, Australia

Big Blue Ocean Cleanup is focused on cleaning beaches and the oceans, protecting wildlife, ocean research and innovative technologies development. Working across the globe, they help keep the oceans clean with cleanups, create educational resources for schools, send out cleanup equipment to community groups, research ocean pollution and raise awareness for clean oceans.

Blue Ocean Gear

USA

Blue Ocean Gear designs and engineers Smart Buoy technologies that enable near real-time tracking and monitoring of fixed fishing and aquaculture gear, including offshore lines, traps and nets, thus providing a solution in preventing the significant problem of ghost gear. These buoys alert when gear has moved outside intended fishing areas, allowing for quick retrieval. In addition to tracking the location of fishing gear, the buoys collect a variety of oceanographic data. The company is supported by Conservation International Ventures.

Blue Ocean Society for Marine Conservation

USA

Blue Ocean Society works to protect marine animals and their habitats in the Gulf of Maine, through a variety of research and education programs. In their efforts to make facts about the marine life of the Gulf of Maine more accessible to the general public, the Blue Ocean Society regularly gives presentations on marine life to schools and libraries (followed by beach clean-up trips). They have also partnered with a number of reputable whale tour operators in the area to organize wild whale watching tours.

Blue Seas Protection

UK and Iceland

Blue Seas Protection is a marine conservation charity with the multiple missions of addressing climate and environmental issues, political campaigning, education and awareness about marine conservation, and direct action, working at all levels, from global and national Government campaigns, to local "boots on the ground" community projects. Their main activities are aimed at: Combatting overfishing (via advocacy, the Seaspiracy petition, and working with local fisheries), combatting marine pollution (via their Operation Sea Sweep programme and beach cleanups), education and awareness (via their SharkLab programme and outreach), the protection of marine species (including their BSP Marine Mammal Medics for local incidents), and their Marine Crime Watch monitoring and reporting system.

Bracenet.net

Germany

Bracenet describes itself as a upcycling company. Alongside several partners such as Ghost Diving and Healthy Seas, they collect ghost fishing gear from the ocean floor, and transform this lost or discarded waste into useful products, in the process raising considerable funds for marine conservation projects. Initially known for their Bracenet bracelets, their range now includes other jewellery, bags, key chains, dog leashes, camera accessories, amongst others. Their motto: 'Save the seas, Wear a net'.

Breathe Conservation

South Africa

Breathe Conservation aims to promote ocean conservation, working on initiatives to educate and take action on sustainable conservation solutions. This includes drawing attention to the problem of marine plastic pollution. Their educational focus is on schools, predominantly primary schools. Amongst other campaigns, they organize monthly reef clean ups at Vetchies beach in Durban where the public ‘interact with marine life and see first hand the damage that plastic pollution has on our marine life.’ Their current project, with star swimmer Sarah Ferguson, One Ocean Swim: Durban to Cape Town, is aimed at highlighting the need for conservation of the oceans. Other initiatives include new programmes such as their Marine Guide Development project starting in June 2022 supported by Oceans Alive.
