For specific species, such as Turtles, Cetaceans, or Corals, and for specialised areas, such as Marine Pollution or Marine Research, go to the specific categories on the Conservation base page.
ECO : Environment and Conservation Organizations of Aotearoa New Zealand
New Zealand
ECO is a network of fifty-plus large and small environmental organisations in New Zealand, as well as several hundred individuals. 'The core of ECO’s work is promoting and strengthening community environmental action, and working collaboratively towards better government policies and management decisions. ECO also works on global issues such as climate change, Antarctica, and oceans.' Amongst their focus areas related to marine issues, are: protection of the Ross Sea and Southern Ocean in Antarctica, expansion of aquaculture, sustainable fisheries, protection of coastal areas, oceans policies and marine protection.
ECOMAR
Belize
With a mission to inspire learning and conservation ethics through outreach programs, hands on participation and research, ECOMAR is a conservation organization in Belize with multiple engagements in conservation, including their St. George's Caye Research Station & Field School with supports archaeological and marine research. They also have a Turtle Watch Program which studies sea turtle populations, and are engaged in the Belize Coral Reef Watch Program (part of the Meso-American Coral Reef Watch Program and is an “Early Warning Alert System” for coral bleaching. There is also the Lionfish Project where ECOMAR, the Belize Fisheries Department and other partners work with stakeholders in Belize to manage the invasive lionfish.
Earth Echo International
USA
EarthEcho International is a nonprofit 501c3 organization founded in 2005 by siblings Philippe and Alexandra Cousteau in honor of their father Philippe Cousteau Sr., son of the legendary explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau. EarthEcho International envisions a world where every individual, from all backgrounds and experiences, has the opportunity and tools to create a healthy and thriving environment. To that end, their mission is to build a global youth movement to protect and restore our ocean planet. EarthEcho collaborates with youth around the world to provide knowledge and develop tools that drive meaningful environmental action to protect and restore our ocean planet. Reaching more than 2 million people in 146 countries, they support the next generation to become environmental leaders who will transform the future.
Earth Justice
USA
Earth Justice is a non-profit public interest environmental law organisation which uses the power of law to protect people's health, to preserve natural places and wildlife, to advance clean energy, and to combat climate change. Earthjustice fights to protect the ocean ecosystem from overfishing, massive pollution and habitat loss, aiming at a healthy ocean strong enough to weather the changes ahead.
Earth Law Center
USA
ELC works 'to transform the law to recognize and protect nature’s inherent rights to exist, thrive and evolve'. Members of the group focus on the rights of nature in law, in order to reverse what they regard as a trend of environmental degradation, and that current environmental laws have been unable to solve this. Ocean Rights are included in their portfolio, which includes a focus on coral reefs, marine pollution, rights of coastal communities, marine protected areas amongst others. They have offices in Washington State, California, Colorado, Mexico City, New York, and Toronto, and operate internationally. On their website are toolkits giving information of various specialist areas such as coral reefs and marine pollution.
East Africa Whale Shark Trust
Kenya
The East African Whale Shark Trust is a grass roots project dedicated to marine conservation in general and whale shark conservation in particular. Based on Diani beach the EAWST was founded in response to the increase in the whale shark population along the Kenyan coast as well as increased interest from the tourist sector. The increase in the number of whale sharks along the Kenyan coast has meant they have become a target. All that is required by international law is that whale shark trade be monitored. The EAWST provides a research centre for collecting and analysing data on the local whale shark population, its habits and movements. The Trust works with other regional organisations, the long term goal being to increase protection and promote the conservation of the biggest fish in the ocean.
EcoOcean
Israel
EcoOcean is a non-profit Israeli organization established by the Weil family and a group of leading scientists and environmentalists in 2002. The organization’s stated mission is 'to empower people to care for the marine and coastal environment of Israel and the region'. This is achieved via research, education and civic engagement. They promote protection of the marine environment, so that this will become a 'high priority amongst the general public and policy makers in Israel'. Their areas of focus are the Mediterranean and the Red Sea
Ecology Action Centre
Canada
The Ecology Action Centre is a member-based environmental charity in Miꞌkmaꞌki (Nova Scotia) taking leadership on critical issues from biodiversity to climate change to environmental justice. Their coastal team works and advocates to protect coastal ecosystems and to help Nova Scotians understand the risks of coastal climate change and the adaptation options available. Their Marine programme aims to protect the marine ecosystem and maintain sustainable fisheries which support coastal communities and livelihoods. Here they focus on three main areas: i. Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture, advocating for fishing and aquaculture policies and practices that minimize harmful impacts on the marine ecosystem. ii. Marine Protection, supporting and advocating for marine protection and pollution reduction in the marine environment, both within Canadian waters and on the high seas. This includes marine protected areas, protection from bottom trawling. iii. Sustainable Seafood, working towards increasing consumer and retailer access to properly labelled, sustainable seafood choices, including SeaChoice.
Ecomares
Colombia

Their research includes coral reef monitoring and conservation restoration, research and protection of benthic fauna, sustainable fishing practices, amongst others.
Environment America
USA
Environment America is a policy and action group which advocates for the whole environment. Their Clean Water Network and Oceans campaigns have a direct impact on marine life. Via their Oceans Campaign they advocate against new oil and gas drilling in the oceans, and to phase out existing ocean drilling operations. Environmental Justice Foundation
UK
Under the banner 'Protecting people and planet. Environmental security is a human right', EFJ has a strong marine component, supported by the view that the pressure which is being placed on the ocean is putting the lives and livelihoods of billions of people across the globe at risk. Their ocean campaign focuses on combatting illegal and unsustainable fishing, and the human rights abuses resulting from these activities, and protecting the coastal communities and wildlife that depend on the ocean.
