Protection of Marine Environments and Marine Life
Multi-disciplinary marine conservation organizations and groups involved in the protection of marine environments and marine life
Marine protected areas - Marine animal conservation and rehabilitation - Protection of endangered species - Conservation of marine and coastal diversity - Protection of coastline -
Protection of marine life - Lionfish eradication
For specific species, such as Turtles, Cetaceans, or Corals, and for specialised areas, such as Marine Pollution or Marine Research, go to the specific categories on the Conservation base page.
Canadian Wildlife Federation
Canada
Canada's Wildlife Foundation has a strong oceans component in which focuses the following key areas: Reducing the impact of Fisheries on Marine Wildlife; Marine Pollution; and Marine Protected Areas. Over fishing is a major area of interest as it is crucial to maintain ample food for marine life that relies on these areas for winter grounds or having their young.
Cape Conservation Group
Australia
Cape Conservation Group, the North West Cape’s conservation organisation is based in Exmouth, Western Australia, covering both land and marine projects. It is a community group, with the aim to “Preserve and protect the North West Cape, now and for future generations”. Their current projects include: PROTECT NINGALOO – Save Exmouth Gulf, Recycling in Exmouth, Developments on North West Cape, Ningaloo Resilient Reefs, Beach Cleanups. Their citizen science projects, involving volunteers, include the Ningaloo Turtle Program.
Cape RADD
South Africa
Cape RADD is a marine field station that serves as a platform for researchers in the Cape Town and False Bay area of South Africa. They facilitate SCUBA and freediving training courses for individuals who want to learn more about the marine environment, conservation and research through hands on field experience and diver development. Their courses include training in multiple data collection and field operation techniques, and theoretical workshops and presentations from field biologists and dive experts. They also run a volunteer programme focusing of citizen science research, community awareness, conservation projects and educational outreach.
Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation
USA
CMBC works to assess the state of marine ecosystems now and in the past and develop predictive models for the future; train new marine biodiversity and conservation scientists; develop novel interdisciplinary approaches linking the biological, physical, social and informatic sciences; increase public understanding of scientific issues and provide sound scientific analyses to policy makers; design technically sophisticated, regionally appropriate strategies to prevent and reverse biodiversity collapse.
Centro de Conservacion Cetacea
Chile
Centro de Conservación Cetacea is a Chilean non-governmental and non-profit organization leader in the conservation of cetaceans and their aquatic ecosystems. Since its creation in 2001 it has achieved great accomplishments in scientific research, educational programs and conservation policies both in the country and in international forums. CCC objectives are:
- To develop non-lethal research programs on cetaceans and their aquatic ecosystems with special emphasis on threatened species. - To integrate the role of cetaceans in the functioning of marine ecosystems in the decision making process of marine conservation policies.
- To design and propose conservation and protection policies for cetaceans and their aquatic environment.
- To identify and evaluate anthropogenic impacts on cetacean populations in order to propose effective mitigation measures.
- To disseminate scientific information to promote active and informed participation of citizens, social organizations and government institutions in cetacean conservation.
- To strengthen cooperation in marine conservation strategies.
Centro de Estudios Marinos Honduras
Honduras
The Centro de Estudios Marinos (CEM) was established with the aim of developing technical capacities in applied research to support the management of marine biodiversity. Founded in Utila, Islas de la Bahía, as the “Centro de Ecología Marina de Utila”, the Center now works on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of Honduras. A significant aspect of their work involves the local fishing community promoting sustainable fishing, marine protected areas, and restoration projects.
Ciimar
Portugal
CIIMAR hosts 10 research groups, organized in 3 research lines, with a scientific staff of more than 400 researchers with diverse backgrounds. Through the integration of different disciplines, the centre aims to contribute to the understanding of the processes which occur in the ocean and the coastal zones, for the sustainable use of aquatic resources and the evaluation of the impact of human activities on ecosystems. Their NetTag project aims to reduce and prevent marine litter derived from fisheries, bringing together scientists, engineers and the fisheries industry. The NetTag team has designed and produced a new technological device, currently under testing phase, for the location and recovery of fishing gear under water.
Climate Science and Policy Watch
USA
Climate Science and Policy Watch is a public interest education and advocacy project 'dedicated to holding public officials accountable for the integrity and effectiveness with which they use climate science and related research in government policymaking, toward the goal of enabling society to respond effectively to the challenges posed by global warming and climate change.'
Coalition Clean Baltic
Sweden
The main goal of CCB is 'to promote the protection and improvement of the Baltic Sea environment and natural resources'. In 1990, non-governmental environmental organizations from the countries of the Baltic Sea Region established Coalition Clean Baltic (CCB)and at present consists of 27 member organizations from Belarus, Finland, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Ukraine and Sweden. The CCB member organisations combined have over half a million members in all countries around the Baltic Sea.
Coastal Conservation Association
USA
The Coastal Conservation Association is a grassroots, non-profit, social movement organization of salt water anglers from 17 coastal states spanning the Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic, and Pacific coasts. The CCA is primarily concerned with the restoration and conservation of coastal marine resources.
