Protection of Marine Environments and Marine Life

Multi-disciplinary marine conservation organizations and groups involved in the protection of marine environments and marine life

Marine protected areas - Marine animal conservation and rehabilitation - Protection of endangered species - Conservation of marine and coastal diversity - Protection of coastline -

Protection of marine life - Lionfish eradication

For specific species, such as Turtles, Cetaceans, or Corals, and for specialised areas, such as Marine Pollution or Marine Research, go to the specific categories on the Conservation base page.

The Mare Foundation (Poland)

Poland

The MARE Foundation works to protect the Polish and Baltic marine environment. The main objectives are the conservation of marine living resources and their habitats through measures aimed at promoting sustainable exploitation of marine and coastal resources, the protection of ecosystems and its components having an impact on the marine environment and raising public awareness of environmental matters, as well as helping people affected by ecological disasters and their effects.

The Ocean Conservancy

USA

Ocean Conservancy is a non-profit environmental advocacy group based in Washington, D.C., United States. One of the leading advocacy groups working to protect marine habitats, the organization helps formulate ocean policy at the federal and state government levels based on peer reviewed science. Serves to protect ocean ecosystems and conserve the global abundance and diversity of marine wildlife through science-based advocacy, research, and public education. Part of the 'Fighting for Trash Free Seas' campaign, International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) is one of their many initiatives, as is Clean Swell (a trash collection mobile app). To encourage cleanups around the globe, they provide various 'how to' information on their website.

The Ocean Foundation

USA

The Ocean Foundation supports, strengthens, and promotes organizations dedicated to reversing the trend of destruction of ocean environments around the world, by funding their projects. Amongst their conservation initiatives are the following : Blue Resilience, Redesigning Plastic, Ocean Acidification and Community Ocean Engagement. Their activities include a wide range of services and information, including: supplying expertise, training and technology; developing the sustainable blue economy concept with partners and through research; supporting island and coastal communities; supporting volunteering opportunities; and funding and supporting far-reaching practical projects in protection of the oceans and marine environments.

The Safina Center

USA

Led by ecologist and author Carl Safina, the Safina Center is comprised of staff, fellows and creative affiliates who together create a body of scientific and creative works that advance the conservation of wildlife and the environment. Part of Stony Brook University, it was founded in 2003 as the Blue Ocean Institute and later renamed in honour of the founder, Carl Safina

The Sea People

Indonesia

The Sea People works to contribute to the protection of one of the last locations on Earth where coral reef systems still thrive, Raja Ampat in Indonesia. Their approach is holistic, involving local communities, who depend on healthy coral reefs for both food and livelihoods, and aim to provide mutually beneficial solutions to ecosystems-based management. By combining science and technology with traditional skills and management techniques, they work towards strengthening the ability of local community members to obtain the skills, knowledge and understanding required for improved management, protection and enhancement of local marine resources. Amongst their many projects are reef restoration, marine park monitoring and crown of thorns control, with conservation technology being applied wherever effective.

Togean Conservation Foundation

Indonesia

The Togean Conservation Foundation was established to help local communities, government, businesses, and visitors work together to protect the area’s biodiverse environment. Their primary aim is to deal with the major threats that damage these habitats before focusing on restoring them to their pristine state. Related projects to include: Crown of Thorns Control; Marine debris and pollution; Tackling illegal fishing (developing viable alternative for destructive fishing, spreading community awareness and lobbying for more effective enforcement); Coral and marine mammal protection; Mangrove restoration (mobilising community to replant deforested and damaged areas of mangrove and developing economic opportunities from intact mangrove systems while reducing reliance on mangrove wood)

Together for the Med

France

Together for the Med was established to reduce fishing pressure in the Mediterranean, with the support of the MAVA Foundation. A group of some 46 NGOs, International Organisations, research centres, private companies, networks and foundations, they are all committed to reducing the pressures on Mediterranean biodiversity. They work together to bring fisheries sustainability, reduce their impact on seagrass meadows and coralligenous habitats, reduce the accidental bycatch of cetaceans, seabirds, sea turtles and sharks, or reduce the negative interactions between fishers and marine mammals. This includes collecting data, raising awareness, improving national and international legal frameworks and developing practical solutions to reduce the pressures of fishing.

Trees to Seas

Hawaii

Trees to Seas is teaching conservation through participation, including education, dive training, ocean clean-ups in various places, including Hawaii, Bali, Belize, Jamaica

Turkish Marine Research Foundation

Turkey

TUDAV conducts marine research, and works to protect marine life, educate the public on the marine environment and raise awareness on its importance in our life. They coordinate educational projects on the protection of the sea, including summer schools and seminars, and organize workshops on current problems like pollution, marine biodiversity, sustainable fisheries, marine protected areas and alien species. TUDAV advocates for marine protected areas, is engaged in the fight against IUU fishing and the protection the marine environment from various pollution sources. They have played a leading role in the establishment of various marine protected areas in Turkey.

Turtle Island Restoration Network

USA, Costa Rica

In 1989 the Sea Turtle Restoration Project (STRP) was launched under the auspices of the Earth Island Institute to protect endangered sea turtles in ways that make cultural and economic sense to the communities that share the beaches and waters with these threatened creatures. It is now an independent organization called Turtle Island Restoration Network. With offices in the USA in California and Texas, and Costa Rica, TIRN has been leading the international fight to protect sea turtle populations worldwide, and is a leading advocate for the world’s oceans and marine wildlife. Their range has expanded to include whale sharks, coho salmon and other marine species under threat They work through grassroots empowerment, consumer action, strategic litigation, hands-on restoration, environmental education, and by promoting sustainable local, national and international marine policies.

Two Fish Divers

Indonesia

Two Fish Divers have seven dive centres in Indonesia, on Bali, Manado, South Lombok and North Lombok. In addition to dive training, they offer opportunities to become involved in environmental projects including coral watch and restoration, shark awareness, manta ray conservation.

Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation

South Africa

The Two Ocean Aquarium is involved in marine research, marine conservation, ocean advocacy, and most recently, in 2018, founded of the Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation to educate about healthy and abundant oceans for life. The Education Foundation is able to reach and have an impact on people, communities and habitats with their environmental education, conservation and marine science research programmes.
