Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation Inc
South Negros, Philippines
PRRCFI is the organization behind Danjugan Island, a wildlife sanctuary with a renowned environmental education program - and Wala Usik, a local movement for circular economy. PRRCFI was established in 1994 by a group of divers who first fell in love with a little island called Danjugan in 1974. In the 1980s a period of destructive and unsustainable fishing seriously harmed the island’s reefs. After a long period of campaigning, the ownership of Danjugan Island was transferred to PRRCFI, and now is the center of a marine reserve, with 3 sanctuaries (no-take zones). PRRCFI has since established several environmental programs that focus on biodiversity conservation, nature tourism, science and research, environmental education, solid waste management and zero-waste initiatives.
Plett Stranding Network
South Africa
The Plett Stranding network is, as implied by its name, a network of organizations (such as Orca Foundation, NSRI) and qualified individuals working together for stranded marine creatures. Co-ordinated by Dr Gwen Penry and established to attend incidents of stranded marine mammals in order to collect important scientific information and, where possible, attempt a rescue. The network has grown to include other marine life that may need assistance, especially marine birds. Contact Plett Stranding Network: 079 463 4837 to report marine mammals ashore, dead or alive
Point Blue Conservation Science: Marine Ecology Division
USA
Point Blue's (formerly PRBO) Oceans Division uses science to guide ocean ecosystem protection, conservation, and management. Their work is focused on both coastal areas and the oceans, including the impact of climate change, sustainable fisheries and improved ocean zoning strategies that protect wildlife and ecosystems by engaging decision makers and the public in support of healthy oceans. Active in California, Farallon Islands and Gulf of Farallones, Antarctica. Point Blue’s (formerly PRBO) 140 scientists work collaboratively to reduce the impacts of climate change, habitat loss and other environmental threats while promoting nature-based, climate-smart solutions for wildlife and people.
Pristine Seas Protection Project
USA
Pristine Seas Protection Project is a National Geographic project, led by Explorer in Residence Enri Sala. Spending weeks at sea, diving thousands of hours, and seeking out some of the least explored and understood places in the ocean, Sala and a team of determined scientists and filmmakers work to inspire the creation of protected areas for the protection of marine life. Over the last twelve years, Pristine Seas has carried out expeditions in 31 places, 23 of which have since been protected, covering a total area of more than 6 million square kilometres — more than twice the size of India. Finalist in the Revive our Oceans category of the 2021 Earthshot award.
Project Seahorse
Canada and UK
Project Seahorse is a marine conservation organization committed to the conservation and sustainable use of coastal marine ecosystems in general, and seahorses in particular. It is an international and interdisciplinary organization comprised of biologists, development specialists, and other professionals committed to conserving and managing seahorses, their relatives and habitats, through research, education, empowering communities, establishing marine-protected areas, managing subsistence fisheries, restructuring international trade, redressing habitat loss. Their seahorse projects are located in: Australia, China, Malaysia, Philippines, Portugal, Senegal, South Africa, Thailand, USA and Vietnam. On their website one can access their citizen science tool called iSeahorse when one can report sightings of seahorses.
Projeto TAMAR
Brazil
TAMAR Project (an abbreviation of Tartarugas Marinhas, the Sea Turtles) is a Brazilian non-profit organization owned by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation. The main objective of the project is to protect sea turtles from extinction in the Brazilian coastline. The project has since expanded to include protection of sharks and all the sea wildlife that are part of the environment in which the sea turtles live.
Protect Ningaloo
Australia
Protect Ningaloo is a grassroots initiative with the subtitle Save Exmouth. Ningaloo Reef off the coast of Western Australia (some 1200 kms north of Perth) needs the support of its nursery system in Exmouth Gulf, an ecosystem which has been under threat of industrialisation. While the Ningaloo Coast is a World Heritage site (as of 2011), the Exmouth Gulf itself is not, leaving it open to industrial proposals. Industrial corporations have proposed a new marine port in the area as well as steel pipelines to cater for offshore gasfields. In 2021 the WA government announced that it will protect Exmouth Gulf on the Ningaloo Coast by implementing a variety of conservation measures, including the formation of new conservation reserves in areas where major industrial developments were proposed. Nevertheless, the Protect Ningaloo continues with its campaign to ensure that the reef and gulf are fully protected against development. Ningaloo Reef is the world's largest fringing reef, and one of the longest near-shore reef systems in the world, which stretches 300km from Carnarvon's Red Bluff to the Muiron Islands in the north and Exmouth Gulf's Bundegi Beach in the east. Encompassing the Ningaloo Marine Park, the area is known for its corals, and marine life such as the whale shark, humpback whales, manta rays and turtles, amongst many others.
Protective Areas Conservation Trust
Belize
Recognizing the importance of its national heritage, Belize began establishing its system of protected areas in the 1960s, including extensive coastal and marine environments. PACT provides funds to support conservation and promote the environmentally sound management of Belize's natural and cultural resources to foster sustainable development. PACT provides funding for projects and training grants for protected area management, conservation, promotion and development, environmental education and awareness, and community development around protected areas.
Pure
USA
Pure, the philanthropic arm of the World Surf League, leverages the surfing community to advance ocean preservation causes. Their 2021 'We Are One Ocean' initiative has launched a petition calling on world leaders to support protecting and conserving 30% of our oceans by 2030, the target set at the 2021 United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity.
Pure Ocean Fund
France
Pure Ocean is an international endowment fund based in Marseille and Lorient. Its main mission is to mobilize civil society in order to support ambitious and innovative scientific projects for the protection of biodiversity and fragile marine ecosystems. Pure Ocean selects projects with a strong innovative dimension, whether technological, ecological or social. Pure Ocean also raises public awareness of the situation of endangered ecosystems by highlighting solutions to protect them through conferences, the promotion of races and sporting challenges or the provision of “La Goutte Bleue” waste collection kits.
RAMPAO
Senegal
The focus of RAMPAO is on the marine ecoregion of West Africa, the members of the group being Cape Verde, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Mauritania, of Senegal and Sierra-Leone. They aim at conserving the marine habitats of the region for the benefit of all. This includes developing Marine Protected Areas; preserving and restoring the critical habitats necessary for the renewal of fishery resources; supporting one another through information exchange and mutual learning; strengthening their mutual capacities for advocacy, defense of interests and representation of MPAs in the region in the international framework.
