Protection of Marine Environments and Marine Life

Multi-disciplinary marine conservation organizations and groups involved in the protection of marine environments and marine life

Marine protected areas - Marine animal conservation and rehabilitation - Protection of endangered species - Conservation of marine and coastal diversity - Protection of coastline -

Protection of marine life - Lionfish eradication

For specific species, such as Turtles, Cetaceans, or Corals, and for specialised areas, such as Marine Pollution or Marine Research, go to the specific categories on the Conservation base page.

Oceana Belize

Belize

Oceana has been in Belize since 2009 advocating sustainable marine policies, including combatting problems caused by damaging fishing methods and gear, plastic pollution and offshore drilling in Belize's waters which would cause damage to vital marine ecosystems. In 2017 the country unanimously passed a bill imposing an indefinite moratorium on oil drilling in Belize's marine territory in order to protect their barrier reef. Oceana remains involved in maintaining that moratorium.

Oceana Brasil

Brazil

The Brazilian branch of the global marine conservation agency Oceana, with a focus on marine pollution and sustainable fishing.

Oceana Canada

Canada

Oceana Canada was established to protect and restore the extensive Canadian oceans and their marine life. The charity works with civil society, academics, fishers, and government with the aim to return Canada’s formerly vibrant oceans to health. Advocates for policies to improve fish stocks, amongst their many campaigns, they have successfully campaigned to end the shark fin trade, make rebuilding depleted fish populations the law, improve the way fisheries are managed and protect marine habitat. Plastic pollution, seafood fraud, the North Atlantic whales, are amongst their current campaigns.

Oceana Chile

Chile

Oceana in Chile has the mission to protect the oceans and marine life in the extensive Chilean waters. They have achieved important victories in Chile: the creation of marine protected areas, the defense of vulnerable ecosystems from pollution and the public policies promoted for the recovery of national fisheries,

Oceana Europe

Spain

In line with Oceana's missions around the world, in Europe the mission is to protect the oceans and marine life, via advocacy and campaigns. Since 2003, Oceana has achieved dozens of concrete policy victories for marine life and habitats in Europe, including stopping bottom trawling in sensitive habitat areas, protecting sea turtles from commercial fishing gear, the establishment of marine protected areas and protecting marine life. In Europe there are offices in several countries including Brussels, Copenhagen, Geneva and London, UK.

Oceana Mexico

Mexico

Part of the Oceana country network, Oceana in Mexico is dedicated to protecting the ocean and marine life, including combatting plastic pollution. One programme involves targeting the government to address species substitution and seafood fraud via a traceability policy for fish and seafood, from ship to plate.

Oceana Peru

Peru

In Peru, as in other coastal countries, life in the oceans is in danger due to pollution, overfishing, illegal fishing, the destruction of habitats and climate change. Oceana's team of scientists, economists, lawyers, communicators and other collaborators work to change these threats.

Oceana Philippines

Philippines

Oceana Philippines seeks to restore marine life in the Philippine seas, including promoting sound science-based policies to help ensure sustainable fisheries and vibrant marine ecosystems. Their current campaigns focus on sustainable fishing, protecting corals and stopping pollution of the seas by plastic and dumping.

Oceana USA

USA

In the US Oceana advocates for policies that will restore and maintain ocean abundance and biodiversity. 'U.S.-managed waters are among the most extensive national waters in the world, and Oceana is dedicated to making sure those waters are healthy and productive for generations to come. Oceana’s campaigns utilize grassroots organizing, in-house scientific experts and litigators, strategic communications, and political engagement to stop overfishing, reduce bycatch, protect habitat, curb pollution and increase transparency.' There are offices in Alaska, California, New York, Oregon and Florida

Oceaneye (Indonesia)

Indonesia

Ocean Eye is a data collection and financial transfer platform that collects wildlife sighting data and transfers ecosystem service payments. The animal sighting reports are directly linked to micro payments from tourists that go to coastal communities in order to incentivize the protection of endangered and vulnerable species. The mission of Oceaneye is to involve communities to conserve the marine life. By making small payments per wildlife sighted the intention is to ensure that sharks, turtles, rays and all marine life is worth more alive than dead.

Oceanic Preservation Society

USA

Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS) inspires, empowers, and connects a global community using high impact films and visual storytelling to expose the most critical issues facing our oceans, and our planet. Founded by former National Geographic photographer and dive enthusiast Louie Psihoyos in 2005, OPS films include Academy Award-winning The Cove (2009), Racing Extinction (2015), and The Game Changers (2019). OPS Projection Events have illuminated iconic buildings, including the United Nations Building (2014), the Empire State Building (2015), The Vatican (2015), and more recently, the Armadillo in Glasgow, Scotland during Climate COP 26 (2021). Visit their impressive website to Learn more about OPS’ films and impact campaigns, and the organization’s work to expose the truth and protect the planet.

Oceankind

USA

Oceankind's stated mission is ' to improve the health of global ocean ecosystems while supporting the livelihoods of people who rely on them. We seek to advance the policy, science, and technology necessary to reverse the growing threats facing our oceans. Our team leverages experience in innovation and environmental philanthropy to promote the development of policies, organizations, and technologies that can scale to help solve the enormous challenges facing the ocean.'
