Marine protected areas - Marine animal conservation and rehabilitation - Protection of endangered species - Conservation of marine and coastal diversity - Protection of coastline -

Protection of marine life - Lionfish eradication

For specific species, such as Turtles, Cetaceans, or Corals, and for specialised areas, such as Marine Pollution or Marine Research, go to the specific categories on the Conservation base page.

Marine and Coastal Conservation Society of Nigeria

Nigeria

Nigerian Society is dedicated to conservation of the sea, shore and wildlife for both the present and future generation. Their stated aim is 'for cleaner sea'.

This includes promoting biological diversity, developing marine and coastal conservation initiatives, promoting scientific research and ocean literacy and influencing policy by advocating for the marine environment.

Mauritius Marine Conservation Society

Mauritius

Since its creation, the MMCS has developed various programmes aimed at preserving the ecosystem, for instance: attributing greater value to the submarine archaeology, stopping fishing practices using dynamite or underwater weapons, creating artificial reefs, identifying protected marine areas, keeping records of marine mammals driven ashore, identifying and protecting cetaceans as well as creating educational games based on the marine environment.

MedReAct

Greece

MedReAct’s mission is 'to catalyse action for the recovery of Mediterranean marine ecosystems by ensuring a fair and responsible long-term use of our Common Sea.' MedReAct consists senior marine campaigners and NGOs that jointly worked to reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), and who coordinated the coalition OCEAN2012 in Greece, Cyprus, France, Italy and Spain (ocean2012.eu), which helped securing the CFP main objective of stopping overfishing by 2020. They have now turned their attention to recovery of the Mediterranean ecosystems.

Metsahallitus

Finland

Metsähallitus manages state-owned lands and waters stretching across about one third of Finland’s surface area, or more than 120,000 km². Roughly one quarter of this, or over 30,000 km², are marine areas. The main aim of the marine conservation work is to ensure the good status of biodiversity and species of the Finnish underwater nature. This is done by planning the management and sustainable use of state-owned marine areas and the marine conservation network. (extract from website)

They aim at promoting the sustainable use of coastal marine ecosystems, and to create an effective system of Marine Reserves and Protected Natural Areas in Mexico

Mission Blue

USA

The Mission Blue alliance includes more than 200 respected ocean conservation groups and like-minded organizations, from large multinational companies to individual scientific teams doing important research. The focus of Mission Blue is all about protecting the health of the ocean, by inspiring the action necessary to achieve that goal. They have identified 'Hope Spots', areas which are critical for healthy oceans. 'Some Hope Spots are already formally protected, while others still need defined protection. Under Dr. Earle’s leadership, the Mission Blue team has embarked on a series of expeditions to shed light on these vital ecosystems and ignite support to safeguard them as marine protected areas.'

Moidjio Centre for Research, Conservation and Development

Comoros

Moidjio is a Comorian research and conservation group which focuses on cetacean and turtle conservation projects, undertaking acoustic, cetacean monitoring and turtle monitoring projects. They also work to stop poaching of sea turtles on the islands and develop a sustainable ethical whale watching industry.
