Protection of Marine Environments and Marine Life
Multi-disciplinary marine conservation organizations and groups involved in the protection of marine environments and marine life
Marine protected areas - Marine animal conservation and rehabilitation - Protection of endangered species - Conservation of marine and coastal diversity - Protection of coastline -
Protection of marine life - Lionfish eradication
For specific species, such as Turtles, Cetaceans, or Corals, and for specialised areas, such as Marine Pollution or Marine Research, go to the specific categories on the Conservation base page.
Marine Conservation Network
USA
The mission of the Marine Conservation Network is ‘to build a global size ocean community by closing the communication gap between scientists, conservationists, and the general public.’ This includes better communication and understanding among scientists, conservationists, and the public by establishing a shared platform for collaboration in pursuit of conservation and scientific advancement. This is aimed at addressing, together, the challenges facing the oceans today, including climate change, overfishing, plastic pollution, and habitat destruction. Their goal is to raise awareness, promote sustainable fishing practices, protect critical habitats, and ensure the health and resiliency of marine ecosystems. This includes sharing information and resources, including video resources, as well as advocating for policies and actions.
Marine Conservation Philippines
Philippines
MCP is dedicated to preserving and protecting coastal resources in the Philippines through education, volunteerism and research. They work to preserve fragile marine habitats like coral reefs and mangrove forests, with an additional aim of improving the quality of life for marginalised fisherfolk in the central Philippines. A volunteer based organisation, international volunteers can join a large professional team of marine biologists, scientists, teachers and dive instructors. Participation in the program involves extensive scuba diving activities, with training offered on site. ‘Since becoming operational in 2015, MCP has led mangrove replantation efforts, and have removed tons of marine debris and ghost nets. Volunteer divers have placed sinkers and buoys in many marine protected areas, improving demarcation and local conservation efforts, whilst volunteers have taught numerous school classes in the municipality about marine issues.’ Their YouTube channel is https://www.youtube.com/c/MarineConservationPhilippines Amongst several others, check out their video about conservation volunteering at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qA6hggVddfs
Marine Conservation Society
UK
The Marine Conservation Society, based in the UK, organises multifaceted marine conservation projects, including Beachwatch and the Great British Beach Clean weekend annually in September. Plastic pollution is one of several focuses. Their Seasearch project involves volunteers collecting information about marine habitats, plants and animals underwater, thus engaging divers and snorkellers in marine-life monitoring research. The MCS is an active advocate, promoting marine protected areas as a policy with the aim of 30% of UK waters having protected status by 2030.
Marine Conservation Society Seychelles
Seychelles
MCSS promotes the conservation of the marine environment through education, research and through the implementation of a number of programmes. Current projects include Whale Shark, Turtle and Coral Reef monitoring and an environmentally protective mooring programme. The aims of the society are to improve the conservation of marine ecosystems through scientific, management, educational and training programmes.
Marine Life Society of South Australia
Australia
Established in 1976, the Marine Life Society of South Australia is a long-standing incorporated association which aims to foster the study and appreciation of marine life and encourage marine conservation engagement in South Australia. The society's most notable recent achievement was the state-wide protection of all Syngnathidae (including the Leafy sea dragon, Weedy sea dragon, pipefish and seahorses) under the State's Fisheries Management Act.
Marine Mammal Center
USA
The Marine Mammal Center is a private, non-profit U.S. organization that was established for the purpose of rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing marine mammals who are injured, ill or abandoned. It is a veterinary research hospital and educational center, dedicated to the rescue of ill and injured marine mammals.
Marine Protection Atlas
USA
Marine Protection Atlas is the only comprehensive database that identifies and tracks fully and highly protected MPAs throughout the world. Highly informative, the MPAtlas supports international marine conservation initiatives by integrating science-based assessments that measure progress toward protecting 30% of the global ocean in fully and highly protected areas by 2030. This application was created by the Marine Conservation Institute in partnership with Astute Spruce, LLC and EcoQuants LLC
Marine Science Institute, University of Philippines
Philippines
MSI is involved in research and academic endeavours in marine biology, marine chemistry, physical oceanography, marine geology, and related disciplines such as biotechnology. The institute studies marine ecosystems in its main compound in the National Science Complex and the Bolinao Marine Laboratory in Bolinao, Pangasinan. It also pursues extension work in marine protection and management.
Marine Stewards
Singapore
In 2019 Marine Stewards initially focused on sustainable fishing practices in Singapore, and has since expanded its marine conservation programme to encompass Biodiversity, Habitats and Pollution threats to their ocean. They are now represented at engagement sessions with various government agencies.. Their citizen science programme has had several successes, including uncovering illegal sales of the critically endangered shovelnose ray in local wet markets. Their current activities include coral husbandry, reef surveys and monitoring, and responsible fishing.
Marine Watch International
USA
Marine Watch International’s mission is 'to protect the ocean by promoting the sharing of information and fostering collaboration'. One communication medium used is The Ocean Resource, a newsletter which reports on multiple conservation activities and organizations. Their Ocean Conservation Community is a platform space where cooperative networking is enhanced and accelerated using current technology and available to everyone. They have also created an online knowledge hub FundingtheOcean.org which is designed to track, inform and inspire ocean conservation philanthropy.
