For specific species, such as Turtles, Cetaceans, or Corals, and for specialised areas, such as Marine Pollution or Marine Research, go to the specific categories on the Conservation base page.

Lewis Pugh Foundation

UK

The Lewis Pugh Foundation (LPF) works for the preservation and conservation of our oceans. Founder Lewis Pugh is an ocean advocate and a renowned endurance swimmer who, via his remarkable initiatives in challenging conditions, shines a spotlight on the plight of the oceans. He is a UN Patron of the Oceans and currently promoting the creation of marine protected areas around Antarctica. His foundation promotes, for the benefit of the public, the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and ecological environment, particularly the marine environment. LPF also provides education and disseminates information about the marine environment and the importance of its conservation.

Liga para a Proteccao de Natureza

Portugal

LPN was founded in 1948, the oldest environmental NGO of the Iberian Peninsula. In its more than 73 years of existence, LPN has been distinguished with many international awards and some of the nation's most prestigious honors. Their approach to conservation places a priority on sustainable development, including quality of life of present and future human generations. Some of its major projects include the protection of endangered species such as the Iberian lynx, the cinereous vulture, and the stepparian birds of Alentejo, among others. The conservation of marine life and associated marine ecosystems are also a priority for action. Their Circular Seas project - Mares Circulares – launched in 2018, is a global project which encourages the circular economy, environmental awareness and training for waste management and the promotion of active citizenship at the level of volunteering. It aims to contribute to a change of mentality by promoting the creation of environmentally sustainable solutions to the problem of marine litter, in a society made up of more informed and responsible citizens with an understanding of that circularity.

Lighthouse Foundation - Foundation for the seas and oceans

Germany

In support for research, education, and capacity building in coastal and marine conservation, the Lighthouse Foundation promotes science and research, teaching, culture, and the principles of environmentalism and international development in relation to the world's seas and oceans. The Foundation supports projects which aim to solve long-term problems in marine locations with the context of sustainable development, including rising sea levels, fisheries, education about the marine environment and sustainable development.

Live Ocean Foundation

New Zealand

Live Ocean Foundation partners with exceptional New Zealand marine scientists, innovators and communicators to scale up action for a healthy ocean. Sailors Peter Burling and Blair Tuke established Live Ocean Foundation out of their deep concern for the health of the ocean and the life in it. Through their sport they champion action for the ocean, taking this message to the world stage.

Living Seawalls

Australia

With the ever increasing amount of marine construction around the world encroaching on shorelines and destroying natural habitats, Living Seawalls have come up with an innovative solution: combining engineering with ecological concerns, they have created specially designed tiles which are attached to sea walls to create habitats for marine life to attach to. As of October 2021 they have installations in Australia, Singapore, Gibraltar and Wales. Living Seawalls is a program of the Sydney Institute of Marine Science and collaborates with Reef Design Lab. Finalist in the Revive our Oceans category of the 2021 Earthshot award.

Longitude 181

France

LONGITUDE 181 is an association for the protection of the oceans through research, education and collaboration. Under the umbrella of the three pillars of their operations – To share, To alert, To act - the association carries out awareness-raising actions with the general public, lobbying actions with decision-makers and develops programs for the study and preservation of large marine animals: sharks and rays, sperm whales. At the same time, responsible diving is a major focus of the organization, who have created The International Responsible Diver Charter.

Love the Oceans

Mozambique

Love the Oceans is a UK-registered award-winning organization which supports work in Jangamo Bay, Mozambique. Jangamo, home to a huge host of marine life, has never been studied in depth for any prolonged amount of time. Love The Oceans supports the community to protect and study the diverse marine life found here, including many species of sharks, rays and the famous humpback whales, thus combining research, education and diving, and a strong volunteer programme, to educate and achieve a sustainable future. Their ultimate goal is to support the community in establishing a Marine Protected Area for the Inhambane Province in Mozambique, achieving higher biodiversity whilst protecting endangered species.

MAR Expeditions

Mozambique

MAR is committed to being an effective and sustainable partner within the Zavora Bay community, working with the local fishermen to secure their future as well as the future of the marine ecosystems. Their focus is on the movements and abundance of marine animals in Zavora Bay, Mozambique, and beyond. The lab’s core research has focused on manta rays, humpback whales, nudibranchs, and artificial reef and wreck colonization through on-land and underwater surveys since its establishment in 2009. At the same time, via their internships and expeditions, MAR engages with natural scientists, social scientists, university students and engaged naturalists to conduct research and gain experience in fieldwork, and data collection and analysis. The lab is engaged with national and international research institutions conducting research on seahorses, whale sharks, coral reefs, and sea turtles.

MAVA Fondation pour la Nature

Switzerland

The MAVA Foundation is a family-led, Swiss-based philanthropic foundation, founded in 1994 by the late Dr Luc Hoffmann as a continuation of his deep personal commitment to conservation, and now led by his son André Hoffmann. The MAVA Foundation has an exclusive focus on the conservation of biodiversity and is active through five programmes: Mediterranean Basin, West Africa, Switzerland, Sustainable Economy and Impact & Sustainability. 2016-2022 is the foundation’s last strategic phase. The lifecycle of the foundation means that MAVA will phase out of its funding to all partners by 2022.

MCS in Scotland

UK

MCS in Scotland is just as it says, the Scottish arm of the UK's Marine Conservation Society. They focus on marine conservation and fisheries management. MCS Scotland leads the Save Scottish Seas coalition to influence the Scottish Government and Scottish Parliament on all matters marine.
