Protection of Marine Environments and Marine Life

Multi-disciplinary marine conservation organizations and groups involved in the protection of marine environments and marine life

Marine protected areas - Marine animal conservation and rehabilitation - Protection of endangered species - Conservation of marine and coastal diversity - Protection of coastline -

Protection of marine life - Lionfish eradication

For specific species, such as Turtles, Cetaceans, or Corals, and for specialised areas, such as Marine Pollution or Marine Research, go to the specific categories on the Conservation base page.

Fundación Malpelo Columbia

Columbia

The purpose of the Malpelo and other Marine Ecosystems Foundation is to preserve Colombian biological diversity, the conservation of the natural resources and their sustainable use with an emphasis on the marine and coastal environment. Their projects include protection of shark breeding grounds, coral reef protection and restoration, combatting marine and plastic pollution, amongst others. Their work involves research, surveillance and observation, education and ecotourism, and political advocacy.

Fundación Rewilding Argentina

Argentina

Rewilding Argentina is a foundation created to face and reverse the extinction of species and the resulting environmental degradation, recovering the functionality of ecosystems and promoting the well-being of local communities. In 2017 the Rewilding Argentina Foundation created the Marine Conservation Program Without Blue No Hay Verde (No Blue No Green) aimed at protecting the habitat of the Patagonian sea, its coasts and the species that exist there. The goal is to protect 30% of the Argentine Sea to ensure the conservation and regeneration of its ecosystems through the creation of a network of marine and coastal protected areas.

Fundación Vida Silvestre Argentina

Argentina

Founded in 1977 and since 1988 Vida Silvestre represents in Argentina the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the Argentine Wildlife Foundation)has been working on solving the main environmental issues of Argentina. Its mission is "to propose and implement solutions for conserving nature, promoting the sustainable use of natural resources and responsible behaviour on the part of mankind in the context of climate change'. This includes a significant marine component, including establishing marine protected areas and a sustainable fishing model for the country, and protecting marine species including cetaceans.

Galapagos Conservancy

Galapagos, Ecuador and USA

Galápagos Conservancy is dedicated exclusively to the long-term protection and restoration of the Galápagos Islands, including more than 2,000 species found nowhere else on Earth. As a leading direct on-the-ground conservation action, they work with partners, including the Galápagos National Park Directorate, to save imperilled species, build a more sustainable society, and rewild the complex ecosystems of the Archipelago. Collectively, their members represent the largest source of private funding for conservation in the Islands.

Global Choices

USA

Global Choices is a high-profile organization, involving and endorsed by prominent environmentalists, which works to protect our planetary ecosystems. Focusing on the ‘Global Commons’, namely the earth's shared natural resources, such as the high oceans, the atmosphere and outer space and the Antarctic in particular, their stated vision is ‘to achieve consciousness in action that we are one humanity, dependent on the ~Global Commons, the interdependent natural systems crucial to all life.’ Their current mission is to drive action on the Ice Crisis, prioritizing the Arctic and Antarctic Global Commons. The five strategies to achieve their goals are: i. Hands Off the Central Arctic Ice Shield campaign which confront policy makers and industry, ii. an Intergenerational Network ‘Arctic Angels’ or young leaders to raise awareness of issue such as the Ice Crisis, iii. Climate Literacy Education campaign, iv. a Finance element which aims to create instruments to direct funds to protect the Global Common, and v. ‘Humpty Dumpty’ which aims to gather influential female leaders who bring conscious feminine energy to strategically tackle the climate crisis

Global Ocean

UK, India, UAE

Global Ocean is dedicated to the conservation of marine life, by heightening public awareness about the plight of the seas, providing educational resources and raising funds for conservation programmes. Their projects educate and raise awareness about the importance of healthy oceans for sustaining life and positively engage the public and encourage stewardship of our blue planet. In particular, they draw attention to the dangers of plastic pollution in our oceans. They develop and deliver free educational workshops and resources for schools and the public around the world. Similarly, their India branch has a primary focus on raising awareness about plastic pollution through education, outreach and workshops, currently working in the state of Kerala. Their UAE branch focuses on conserving native Elasmobranch species and implementing their plastic pollution education programme.

Global Ocean Commission

UK

The Global Ocean Commission was an international initiative between 2013 and 2016 to raise awareness, and promote action to address, the degradation of the ocean and help restore it to full health and productivity.

Global Ocean Legacy

USA, UK

In 2006 The Pew Charitable Trusts and several partners launched the Global Ocean Legacy project in an effort to establish the world’s first generation of great marine parks. After a decade of working with indigenous groups, community leaders, government officials, scientists and other organizations, the project has aided in the creation of nine major marine reserves and has helped safeguard more than 2.4 million square miles (6.3 million square kilometers) of ocean—an area 12 times the size of Central America.

Global Ocean Trust

Germany

Described as ‘A team of experts promoting ocean solutions through partnerships and innovative finance’, Global Ocean Trust promotes better ocean governance solutions via better regulation, and pragmatic solutions to protect the planet. By working with major ocean alliances and partners, using new technologies, and new sources of finance, their mission is to deliver large-scale marine protection. ‘Through engaging a broad range of public and private partners in protecting the ocean, new opportunities can be created, supporting the marine infrastructure and assisting in addressing key conservation challenges.’ They work with partners to promote ocean optimism, aiming to improve ocean governance through better regulation and innovative partnerships for implementation.

Global Underwater Explorers

USA

Global Underwater Explorers (GUE) is motivated by the ‘desire to safely explore and protect the underwater world and to improve the quality of scuba, technical, and cave diving education, as well as aquatic research.’ GUE members support conservation through a variety of affiliates, including Ghost Diving, Reef Check, and Baykeeper, as well as a variety of academic research projects, such as the coral reef algae documentation and testing, and live shipwreck exploration. Their own initiative, Project Baseline, involves participants worldwide, who survey and record their local aquatic environments (photos, videos, and data logs) to serve as a baseline against which future changes can be measured. This enables building public awareness and supporting political action. There are more than 100 projects in almost 40 countries currently supporting Project Baseline's mission.

Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation

USA

The Moore Foundation funds programs in a number of fields, including the environment. Their Environmental Conservation Program balances long-term conservation with sustainable use. The program establishes models for collaboration that can be replicated and expanded around the globe, and seeks to create lasting change in how land, freshwater and coastal marine ecosystems are managed.

Green Heritage Fund Suriname Dolphin Project

Suriname

The Green Heritage Fund Suriname works for the protection of the wild dolphin population through establishment and maintenance of a sound community monitoring program that contributes to decision-making regarding the estuary of the Suriname River. Working on the conservation of dolphins in the estuary inspired GHFS to expand its conservation efforts to include the marine environment in its entirety. This shift in focus inspired the organization to work towards sustainable use and management of the marine environment, which ultimately motivated the GHFS initiate or promote the use of marine spatial planning in Suriname. Addressing marine litter is also an important focus of the organization.
