Global & National Marine Conservation Agencies
The Giants of conservation, global organizations, national agencies, intergovernmental programmes, including specifically marine-oriented and those very large bodies who have a marine component or fund such programmes.
Professional Association of Diving Instructors
USA
PADI is the world’s leading scuba diver training organization. With more than 137,000 individual members and 6,600 dive centers and resorts worldwide who have issued more than 25 million certifications around the world, you’ll find PADI diver courses and scuba diving services nearly everywhere. The PADI System of diver education is based on progressive training that introduces skills, safety-related information and local environmental knowledge to student divers in stages. One of PADI's focus areas is environmental conservation: divers are great advocates for protecting our water resources. Throughout PADI courses, divers learn the importance of protecting fragile aquatic ecosystems and are encouraged to become involved in local and global conservation efforts. For more than two decades, PADI has partnered with Project AWARE, a global non-profit organization dedicated to 'protecting our ocean planet – one dive at a time.'
Re:wild
USA
Formerly Global Wildlife Conservation, Re:wild aims to protect wildlife by protecting and restoring biodiversity in every sphere, thereby protecting the planet from 'the triple threat of climate change, extinction and pandemics. This includes the ecosystems which impact on ocean life, such as corals reefs, mangroves, seagrasses, amongst others.
Shark Research Institute
USA
Shark Research Institute is a multi-disciplinary non-profit scientific research organization that sponsors and conducts research on sharks and promotes shark conservation. Whaleshark research is a large part of SRI and the public is invited to participate in SRI expeditions. SRI also maintains a database of shark attacks, and provides consultants to areas where attacks are clustered to determine the causes and to recommend environmentally sound solutions. Founded in 1991 at Princeton, New Jersey, USA, today SRI has field offices in Florida, Pennsylvania and Texas, and internationally in Australia, Canada, Ecuador, Honduras, India, Mexico, Mozambique, Seychelles, South Africa and the United Kingdom.
Current projects include visual and satellite tracking, behavioural and DNA studies, environmental advocacy, publication of scientific works and public education. SRI also continue to fight for shark protections at CITES, the primary international venue for conservation treaties.
Society for Conservation Biology
USA
Society for Conservation Biology is an international professional organization dedicated to promoting the scientific study of the phenomena that affect the maintenance, loss, and restoration of biological diversity, including in the oceans. The Society's membership comprises a wide range of people interested in the conservation and study of biological diversity: resource managers, educators, government and private conservation workers, and students.
South African National Parks
South Africa
SANParks manages a system of parks which represents the indigenous fauna, flora, landscapes and associated cultural heritage of the country, including many Marine Protected Areas. In South Africa, all MPA’s are ultimately managed by the South African Government who have agreements with various MPA Management Authorities like South African National Parks (SANParks), amongst others.
Species Survival Commission
Switzerland
The IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) is a science-based network of more than 9,000 volunteer experts from almost every country of the world. Working in close association with IUCN’s Global Species Programme, SSC’s major role is to provide information to IUCN on biodiversity conservation, the inherent value of species, their role in ecosystem health and functioning, the provision of ecosystem services, and their support to human livelihoods. This information is fed into The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
SSC members also provide scientific advice to conservation organisations, government agencies and other IUCN members,
TRAFFIC
UK
TRAFFIC is a wildlife trade monitoring network that works to ensure that trade in wild plants and animals is not a threat to the conservation of nature and species. It is a joint programme of WWF and IUCN The World Conservation Union. Many marine and aquatic species fall under their programme, including for example, sharks, abalone, bluefin tuna. Sustainable fisheries is part of their mission.
The Nature Conservancy
USA
The Nature Conservancy is focused on innovative solutions that match the urgency of the climate change crisis. They work to protect and restore forests, improve working lands, help communities build resilience & work to ensure a clean energy future. Their aim is to work with communities to halt the catastrophic march of climate change. Founded at its grassroots in the United States in 1951, The Nature Conservancy has grown to become one of the most effective and wide-reaching environmental organizations in the world. One of the leading advocacy groups working to protect marine habitats, the organization helps formulate ocean policy at the federal and state government levels based on peer reviewed science. Serves to protect ocean ecosystems and conserve the global abundance and diversity of marine wildlife through science-based advocacy, research, and public education. Part of the 'Fighting for Trash Free Seas' campaign, International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) is one of their many initiatives, as is Clean Swell (a trash collection mobile app). To encourage cleanups around the globe, they provide various 'how to' information on their website.
The Ocean Foundation
