Global & National Marine Conservation Agencies

The Giants of conservation, global organizations, national agencies, intergovernmental programmes, including specifically marine-oriented and those very large bodies who have a marine component or fund such programmes.

LeonardodiCaprio Foundation

USA

The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation (LDF) is 'dedicated to the long-term health and wellbeing of all Earth’s inhabitants'. Oceans is one of four key areas the LDF focuses on, working through collaborative partnerships with organizations such as Oceana and WWF, and thus supports innovative projects and programmes to protect marine life and support communities reliant on the oceans.

Liga para a Proteccao de Natureza

Portugal

LPN was founded in 1948, the oldest environmental NGO of the Iberian Peninsula. In its more than 73 years of existence, LPN has been distinguished with many international awards and some of the nation's most prestigious honors. Their approach to conservation places a priority on sustainable development, including quality of life of present and future human generations. Some of its major projects include the protection of endangered species such as the Iberian lynx, the cinereous vulture, and the stepparian birds of Alentejo, among others. The conservation of marine life and associated marine ecosystems are also a priority for action. Their Circular Seas project - Mares Circulares – launched in 2018, is a global project which encourages the circular economy, environmental awareness and training for waste management and the promotion of active citizenship at the level of volunteering. It aims to contribute to a change of mentality by promoting the creation of environmentally sustainable solutions to the problem of marine litter, in a society made up of more informed and responsible citizens with an understanding of that circularity.

Marine Conservation Institute

USA

Marine Conservation Institute is a non-profit scientific and conservation advocacy organization that has been working since 1996 to promote cooperation essential to protecting and restoring the Earth's biological diversity. From the headquarters in Seattle WA and the Washington DC and California offices, they work to protect marine life around the United States and beyond by encouraging research and training in marine conservation biology, bringing scientists together to examine crucial marine conservation issues, conducting policy research to frame the marine conservation agenda, leading outreach efforts to educate scientists, the public and decision makers on key issues, and building partnerships to solve problems affecting marine life and people.

MarineBio Conservation Society

USA

Since 1998, the MarineBio Conservation Society has been a non-profit volunteer marine conservation and science education group working online together to educate the world about ocean life, marine biology, marine conservation, and a sea ethic. They draw attention to and support the many efforts which are underway to address marine conservation issues, with information, providing resources including a website on marine life cycles.

Mission Blue

USA

The Mission Blue alliance includes more than 200 respected ocean conservation groups and like-minded organizations, from large multinational companies to individual scientific teams doing important research. The focus of Mission Blue is all about protecting the health of the ocean, by inspiring the action necessary to achieve that goal. They have identified 'Hope Spots', areas which are critical for healthy oceans. 'Some Hope Spots are already formally protected, while others still need defined protection. Under Dr. Earle’s leadership, the Mission Blue team has embarked on a series of expeditions to shed light on these vital ecosystems and ignite support to safeguard them as marine protected areas.'

National Fisheries Conservation Center

USA

The mission of the NFCC is to protect healthy oceans and fisheries through collaborative problem-solving, thus to maintain the ocean's capacity to sustain abundant, healthy fisheries and ecosystems. They link people who depend on the oceans with experts in science, policy, and business to develop solutions that last. Their largest program, Global Ocean Health, concentrates on carbon pollution and its multiple consequences to healthy seas and coastal communities.

National Geographic Society

USA

One of the largest non-profit scientific and educational organizations in the world, the National Geographic Society is one of our planet's greatest advocates, educating and protecting the natural world.

National Marine Sanctuary Foundation

USA

The Foundation is a leading voice for U.S. protected waters, working with communities to conserve and expand those places for a healthy ocean, coasts, and Great Lakes. These protected places, the national marine sanctuaries, are home to a significant variety of species. They are protected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and supported by the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, who together partner with communities to educate, study, and conserve these spectacular places for future generations.

National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration

USA

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is an American scientific agency within the United States Department of Commerce that focuses on the conditions of the oceans, major waterways, and the atmosphere. Their Marine Debris Program helps to identify reduce and prevent debris in the marine environment, targeting beachgoers, fishers, boat and marine owners, and students and their educators. Their resources include useful information products. Their ARGO programsupports a global array of almost 4,000 robotic profiling floats that measure the temperature and salinity of the upper 2,000 meters (1.2 miles) of the ocean. This constant monitoring of the temperature, salinity, and currents of the upper ocean is publicly available within hours after collection and used in research across the globe.

Natural Resources Defense Council

USA, International

New York City-based Natural Resources Defense Council is a non-profit international environmental advocacy group works to protect the oceans from pollution and exploitation. The organisation supports the implementation of laws that help to save the marine life including allowing overfished species to rebound. In addition, the council takes necessary efforts to preserve ocean treasures, prevent destructive fishing practices and protect coastal communities from offshore drilling, among others.

Ocean Cleanup

Netherlands

Initiated by Dutch teenager Boyan Slat in 2013, The Ocean Cleanup is designing and developing cleanup systems to clean up what is already polluting our oceans and to intercept plastic on its way to the ocean via rivers via their Interceptors. The Ocean Cleanup's team consists of more than 120 engineers, researchers, scientists and computational modelers working daily to rid the world's oceans of plastic.

Ocean Expert

Belgium

OceanExpert is a Global directory of marine and freshwater professionals, managed by the UNESCO/IOC Project Office for IODE in Belgium. It provides extensive information including contact and research topic details on thousands of researchers and other marine and freshwater professionals around the world. The information is searchable from multiple perspectives, including names, specialities, type of organization, projects, oceans, countries.
