Global & National Marine Conservation Agencies
The Giants of conservation, global organizations, national agencies, intergovernmental programmes, including specifically marine-oriented and those very large bodies who have a marine component or fund such programmes.
IUCN Global Marine and Polar Programme
Switzerland
The IUCN Global Marine and Polar Programme (GMPP) has a team committed to effectively addressing key global challenges in the marine and polar environment. GMPP cooperates with other IUCN thematic and regional programmes and with the IUCN Commissions to ensure that marine and polar ecosystems are maintained and restored in their biodiversity and productivity, and that any use of the resources is sustainable and equitable.
Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO
France
The purpose of the Intergovernmental Oceanic Commission is to promote international cooperation and to coordinate programmes in research, services and capacity-building, in order to learn more about the nature and resources of the ocean and coastal areas and to apply that knowledge for the improvement of management, sustainable development, the protection of the marine environment, and the decision-making processes of its Member States. In addition, IOC is recognized through the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as the competent international organization in the fields of Marine Scientific Research (Part XIII) and Transfer of Marine Technology (Part XIV).
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
Switzerland
The IPCC has been established by World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to assess scientific, technical and socio-economic information relevant for the understanding of climate change, its potential impacts and options for adaptation and mitigation. Ocean acidification is one of many concerns within their focus.
International Climate Initiative
Germany
The International Climate Initiative (IKI) is an important part of the German government international climate finance commitment. Since 2022, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) has been the lead ministry for the IKI. Since 2008, IKI has been financing climate and biodiversity projects in developing and newly industrializing countries, as well as in countries in transition. IKI focuses on four areas: mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, adapting to the impacts of climate change, conserving natural carbon sinks with a focus on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+), as well as conserving biological diversity, including in marine environments. Their significant contribution to marine environments is evident in the projects recorded in their impressively comprehensive website.
International Coral Reef Initiative
Australia
The International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) is an informal partnership between Nations and organizations which strives to preserve coral reefs and related ecosystems around the world. Although the Initiative is an informal group whose decisions are not binding on its members, its actions have been pivotal in continuing to highlight globally the importance of coral reefs and related ecosystems to environmental sustainability, food security and social and cultural wellbeing. The work of ICRI is regularly acknowledged in United Nations documents, highlighting the Initiative's important cooperation, collaboration and advocacy role within the international arena. Both CORDIO and GCRMN are operational networks and programmes of ICRI, acting implementing arms of the initiative.
International Fund for Animal Welfare
USA
IFAW is an international animal protection foundation. Amongst their many activities, they are involved in marine initiatives including anti-whaling and the protection of dolphins. It is one of the largest animal welfare and conservation charities in the world. The organization works to rescue individual animals, safeguard populations, preserve habitat, and advocate for greater protections. IFAW was instrumental in ending the commercial seal hunt in Canada. In 1983 Europe banned all whitecoat harp seals products. This ban helped save over 1 million seals. IFAW operates in over 40 countries
International Maritime Organisation
UK
IMO is the United Nations' specialized agency responsible for safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution by ships. IMO's Intervention Convention affirms the right of a coastal State to take measures on the high seas to prevent, mitigate or eliminate danger to its coastline from a maritime casualty. The International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Co-operation (OPRC), 1990 provides a global framework for international co-operation in combating major incidents or threats of marine pollution. A protocol to this convention (HNS Protocol) covers marine pollution by hazardous and noxious substances.
International Union for Conservation of Nature
Switzerland
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is a membership Union uniquely composed of both government and civil society organisations. It provides public, private and non-governmental organisations with the knowledge and tools that enable human progress, economic development and nature conservation to take place together. Famous for its Red List of Threatened Species Amongst the many programmes and specialist groups that are under the auspices of IUCN are the following: Global Marine and Polar Programme, Species Survival Commission, High Seas Task Force
JPI Oceans
Belgium
JPI Oceans is an intergovernmental platform that strives to increase the impact of national investments in marine and maritime research and innovation. In supporting research and innovation JPI Oceans is helping to ensure society has better knowledge of the seas and oceans, and the potential for sustainable blue growth and jobs whilst also addressing the challenges of climate change and human impact on the ocean.
Dedicated to increase the value of national investments in marine and maritime research.
Kenya Wildlife Service
Kenya
The Kenya Wildlife Service is a Kenyan state corporation that was established in 1989 to conserve and manage Kenya’s wildlife. With the mandate to conserve and manage wildlife in Kenya and to enforce related laws and regulations, it is responsible for several marine parks, including Watamu, Kasiti Mpunguti, Mombasa, Kiunga and Malindi.
Korean Federation for Environmental Movements
South Korea
KFEM is an extensive environmental organization with tens of thousands of members and many 47 local branches which focus on various environmental issues including energy and waste, ozone depletion, deforestation, biodiversity and climate change. Its Oceans Committee actively campaigns to stop the dumping of untreated waste water into the ocean. In addition, KFEM works to protect endangered species such as whales and dolphins through marine protected areas, targets illegal fishing and bycatch levels by surveillance. The organization also campaigns to halt the destructive extraction of beach sand for the use of construction projects as well as to stop reckless coastal area development.
